Chapter Fifty-Four · The Complete Tales of Ji Gong

Showing his divine powers, the monk makes sport of Lei Ming;Giving away a wondrous medicine, he nobly saves Wang Zhong

A line drawing in the manner of a late-Qing lithographed edition: on the upper floor of a tavern with a staircase at the left, a fierce bearded swordsman frozen mid-stride on the stair with his sabre raised high, eyes bulging and mouth open; a ragged monk sits at the table with a cup at his lips and eyes closed, a jug and dishes before him; a slim young man in a cloak stands at the right with clasped fists and a rueful smile; a window shows a pagoda and rooftops.

Now, when Ji Gong answered from downstairs, Hua Yunlong was upstairs. He was a bird that had already felt the bow, and like any thief his nerve was weak: with one bound he leapt out of the window of the tower and fled. At this Chen Liang said, “Second Brother, now do you see? I told you not to say it, and look, here he is!” Lei Ming drew his saber, ran to the head of the stairs and looked down. He saw a monk in hopelessly ragged clothes, his stubbly hair grown out over two inches long and his face caked with grease and grime, climbing the stairs on his way up. Lei Ming raised his saber, meaning to cut the monk down the moment he came up. The monk looked up, saw him at once, pointed a finger at him and chanted the six-syllable mantra: “Om mani padme hum!” With the immobilizing spell he froze Lei Ming where he stood.

Ji Gong came up into the tower and walked right past Lei Ming. As soon as Chen Liang saw him, he hurried to bow and said, “Master, have you been well?” The monk looked at him and said, “Liang’er, so you’re here. Good!” “Your disciple has been waiting here a long time,” said Chen Liang. “Come and have a drink, Master!” The monk came over and sat down. Chen Liang poured him a cup of wine, and the monk picked it up and drank. Chen Liang came over and said, “Master, have mercy, have mercy! Lift the immobilizing spell! If anybody sees this, what will it look like?” The monk shook his head.

Just then, from the foot of the stairs, came a cry of “Aiya!” and then a clatter, a crash and a thump, thump. It was the waiter, carrying the dishes on a tray. He had been thinking, “These three gentlemen upstairs are big spenders. If I wait on them well, I’m sure to get a fat tip.” He had just started up the stairs with the dishes when he looked up and saw this man with the blue face and red beard holding up a saber as if about to kill somebody. The fright turned the waiter’s arms and legs to water. Down went the tray, over he went too, and he tumbled to the bottom of the stairs. Up above, Chen Liang heard it and begged his master again: “Master, please lift the immobilizing spell, quick! If people see this, it really won’t look right.” “He gets off cheap,” said Ji Gong. He pointed a finger: “Come on over!” Only then could Lei Ming move, and only then did his head clear. He said to himself, “This monk is not one to tangle with. First I’ll put my saber back in its sheath, and then I’ll work out how to get him. I’ll go over and say nice things to him and sit down beside him, then catch him unawares with one stroke of the saber and kill him. That will avenge my Second Brother Hua. Let him learn that a spear in the open is easy to dodge, but an arrow from the dark is hardest of all to guard against.” His mind made up, he came over, knelt, kowtowed to Ji Gong and said, “Master, since you are the master of my sworn brother Chen Liang, you are as good as my own master. A moment ago I was blind and ignorant. I beg you to forgive me.” Chen Liang was delighted to see it and thought, “My Second Brother is a good man after all. When he knows he’s wrong, he mends his ways.” So Chen Liang said, “Master, my Second Brother knows he was wrong and owns up to it. For my sake, please forgive him!” “Get up,” said the monk. Lei Ming stood up and sat down on the monk’s bench, and the monk stood up and moved away to the other side. “Master, why are you moving away?” asked Chen Liang. “A spear in the open is easy to dodge, but an arrow from the dark is hardest of all to guard against,” said the monk. “One stroke of a saber when you’re caught unawares is no joke.” Lei Ming’s heart jumped in fright. “Master, don’t you worry at all!” said Chen Liang. “My Second Brother is a rough sort, but he would never dare be rude to you.” “I know that too,” said the monk.
