Chapter Eighty · The Complete Tales of Ji Gong

Stung by idle talk, a bully strikes the monk in a rage;At the inquest ground, the killers spill the truth

A line drawing in the manner of a late-Qing lithographed edition: inside a tavern with wine jars, an abacus counter and a stove, a ragged monk at a table at the left raises a wine cup with a contented smile; a waiter with a towel over his shoulder cups one hand to his mouth to call out an order; a cook at the stove bangs two ladles together; a stout proprietor works an abacus behind the counter; a scholar at the right sips from a cup, and a man with a bowl in his hands walks in through the door with fixed, staring eyes.

Now, when Ji Gong came to the Erlong Tavern and heard what the waiter had to say, the monk said, “Do you want to sell more or don’t you?” “I want to sell more,” said the waiter. “But look, we haven’t got much stock. A few jin of meat, a dozen-odd jin of flour, one little chicken, and not much wine either. We’ve got the seats and nothing to put in front of them. How am I supposed to sell more?” “Never mind that,” said the monk. “Have you got water?” “There’s a well out the back,” said the waiter. “If you’ve got water, you’ve got wine,” said the monk. “Just draw water and sell it as wine. I guarantee nobody will find fault. I can have you taking a hundred strings of cash in no time. Have your manager rattle his abacus, and have the cooks bang the little ladle on the big ladle. When I order two pots of wine, you sing out ‘Two pots of baigan!’, and have them all shout it back, and the customers will soon come. In the eating-house trade, it takes a bit of noise to do business.” The waiter was desperate enough to try anything, and did just as the monk suggested. He told the manager to rattle the abacus, and at the stove they banged the ladles and slammed down the rolling pins. “Two pots of wine,” said the monk. “Two pots of baigan!” the waiter called out. The manager and everyone else answered him, shouting the order back. The waiter had only just brought the monk his wine when a customer came in from outside. The waiter looked and recognized Shopkeeper Chen from the grain shop across the street. Shopkeeper Chen had always hated drinkers more than anything. If one of his own assistants took a drink and he found out, the man was out of a job. Today he had just finished his meal and was standing in his doorway rinsing his mouth when his mind went foggy, and he walked into the Erlong Tavern and said, “Two pots of wine.” The waiter knew Shopkeeper Chen never touched the stuff, and asked him, “Shopkeeper Chen, how come you want a drink today?” Shopkeeper Chen glared at him. “I want a drink,” he said. “What’s it to you?” Having been snubbed, the waiter brought him two pots of wine. Then Shopkeeper Chen’s head cleared, and he thought to himself, “I’ve just eaten, and I don’t drink. How did I go all muddled and want a drink?” He thought again: “Well, now that I’ve ordered it, I may as well find out what wine tastes like.” And so a man who never drank was drinking today. Just then another customer came in. His eyes were fixed and staring, and he held a bowl in his hand. He had bought three coppers’ worth of chive-flower relish and one copper’s worth of sesame oil.

He had come out to buy a few things, and when he got to the door of the Erlong Tavern his mind went foggy. He came in, sat down and said, “Two pots of wine.” The waiter said he would and brought the wine over. All of a sudden the man came to his senses and thought, “We haven’t finished eating at home. What did I come in here and order wine for?” He was still sitting there dazed when another man came in from outside. He too carried a bowl, with two cakes of beancurd in it that his family was waiting on to cook a dish. When he reached the door of the tavern, in he came without meaning to, sat down and asked for wine. The waiter brought the wine over, and only then did he come to himself. He remembered that his family was waiting to cook and had sent him to buy beancurd. “What did I come in and order two pots of wine for?” he said. “I’ve got chive-flower relish,” said the first man. “Put your beancurd in and mix it up, and the two of us can drink. I never meant to come in for a drink either.” So these two were drinking too. People kept coming in, in threes and fives, and went straight on inside. Then a man came in carrying five packets of food. He sat down and talked to himself: “Second Brother, here’s a packet for you. Third Brother, here’s one for you. Fourth Brother, one for you. Fifth Brother, one for you. Waiter, ten pots of wine, and six dishes to start with. You four brothers, order whatever you fancy.” The waiter looked, and saw what seemed to be one man talking to several. He couldn’t make out what was going on.

A word of explanation: this man was the eldest of five sworn brothers. He was treating his four brothers to dinner, and had settled on the Delong Tavern. The four of them had gone into the Delong. But his mind went foggy, and he seemed to see the four of them sitting here, so he had ordered the wine and dishes. When the waiter brought them, he came to himself. “This is the Erlong,” he thought. But he had already ordered the dishes, and there was nothing for it. He went over to the Delong to look, and there were the four of them waiting for him, not having ordered yet. He called the four of them over. Before long, every seat in the place was taken. The waiter couldn’t keep up. With so many people, the wine all ran out. “No wine — then draw cold water,” thought the waiter. He went out the back at once, drew a bucket of cold water, poured it into the wine jar, filled the pots from it, and took two pots to a customer. No sooner had he done so than the customer called, “Waiter, come here.” “That’s done it,” thought the waiter. “I’ve given him cold water, and he won’t stand for it.” He hurried over. “What is it, sir?” “Have you changed your wine?” said the customer. “Maybe I poured the wrong one,” said the waiter. “This wine is a good deal better than what you had before,” said the customer. “If you always sell this wine, I’ll come and drink here every day.” “That’s strange!” thought the waiter. “I gave him cold water, and he says it’s better?” Customers came and went, and the place was packed beyond bearing. Then two more men came in from outside. The one in front had a pale, bluish face, two short eyebrows, triangular eyes, a hawk’s nose, a pointed chin and fleshless cheeks. He was dressed all in black, his hat askew and a big cloak over his shoulders. Close behind him came another, likewise with a rabbit’s head and snake’s eyes, a turtle’s back and a snake’s waist. As soon as these two came in, the customers all called out, “Third Master! Fourth Master! Come and drink over here!” “Don’t make a fuss, gentlemen,” said the two, and they came in and sat down at a table right behind the monk. When the waiter saw who it was, he frowned: he knew these two were always out to smear lime on their lips, as the saying goes, and eat white — that is, eat without paying. There was nothing he could do. He came over, wiped down the table and said, “What wine and dishes will you two gentlemen have?”
