Chapter Eighty-One · The Complete Tales of Ji Gong

Reading the note, the magistrate’s heart turns to the holy monk;Chasing the corpse, the runners meet the head constables on the road

A line drawing in the manner of a late-Qing lithographed edition: outside a roadside wine shop with a tiled roof, a willow and a wall, a ragged monk at a table at the left holds a stack of plates high in one hand and a cup in the other, glancing sideways with a sly grin; at the next table a short, fierce man in a headband copies him, holding his own stack of plates up with a stern face; a waiter with a towel over his shoulder and a wine jug stands in the doorway with his mouth open.

Now, the magistrate ordered the killers brought forward, and the runners brought Zhang Fu and Li Lu before him. The magistrate looked them over. “You two,” he said, “what are your names?” “Your humble servant is called the Sky-Snatching Hawk, Zhang Fu,” said the one. “Your humble servant is called the Rat Crossing the Street, Li Lu,” said the other. “Which of you two beat the monk to death?” said His Honour. “It was Zhang Fu who beat the monk to death,” said Li Lu. “I was trying to break it up.” “Li Lu killed him,” said Zhang Fu. “You pair of scoundrels!” said His Honour. “Which of you killed him, then?” “If Your Honour doesn’t believe me,” said Li Lu, “look at Zhang Fu’s hand: there’s blood on it. He says I killed him, but there’s no blood on my hand.” His Honour at once had the runners examine them, and sure enough, there was blood on Zhang Fu’s hand. “Zhang Fu,” said the magistrate, “it’s plain that you killed him. And still you try to wriggle out of it?” “I beg to report to Your Honour,” said Zhang Fu, “the monk, yes, I killed him. But Liu Erhun, cut down with one stroke of a knife at the door of the Gao Family Money Shop outside the North Gate, that was Li Lu’s killing.” When His Honour heard this, he was taken aback.

A word of explanation: no wonder the monk had called the two of them cuckolds. Zhang Fu and Li Lu both came of families gone to ruin. Out in the world they lived as idle bullies and preyed on the rich; there was nothing they would not do. At home each of them had taken a wife. And out in the world, the friends these two made were all moneyed young rakes. Whenever they saw a man with money, the two of them would worm their way into his friendship, and there was no one they could not make friends with. If a man liked his food, they would treat him to meals first; if he liked whoring, they would go whoring with him. After a while they would take him home and have their wives seduce him, while the husband pretended to know nothing and played the stand-up fellow. If he wasn’t borrowing money from the man, he was borrowing things of his to pawn. One day the wife would have the man get her a bracelet made, the next day she would have him buy her clothes, and husband and wife lived off him together. How did Liu Erhun come to be killed by Li Lu? It was because a kinsman of Liu Erhun’s had given him a few hundred taels of silver. When Li Lu saw that Liu Erhun had money, he took him home to live with him, and they ate and drank as one household. Li Lu’s wife set about seducing Liu Erhun, and Liu Erhun was a young man too; how could he resist a pretty woman? He brought out his silver, and the food, the drink, the clothes and the finery were all paid for by him. Later, when Liu Erhun had spent all his silver, he still ate and drank at Li Lu’s house, and Li Lu tried to throw him out. “I spent all my money in your house,” said Liu Erhun, “and I’ve got nowhere else to go. Telling me to leave won’t work. When you eat, I eat; when you drink, I drink.”
