The Haunted House

A line drawing in the manner of a late-Qing lithographed edition: In the lamplit evening study of a country house, a young scholar propped on one elbow on his couch stares wide-eyed at a long low bench, where two tiny bearers have set down a hand-sized coffin and a tiny mourning woman weeps into her sleeve beside a tiny manservant and maid, with a bookshelf, desk, lamp and lattice window behind them.

Mr. Li of Changshan was the nephew of a Minister of Justice. His house was full of uncanny things. Once he saw a long bench in the hall, flesh-pink in colour, very long and smooth. Li knew there had never been any such thing in the house. He went up and pressed it with his hand. It bent under his touch, soft as flesh. He drew back and fled in fright. When he turned to look, its four legs were moving, and little by little it went into the wall. Another time he saw a white staff leaning against the wall, clean, glossy and long. He went up to steady it. It slid over, slick to the touch, and wriggled like a snake into the wall. Only after a while was it gone.

In the seventeenth year of the Kangxi reign, a scholar named Wang Junsheng was teaching school in Li's house. One evening, when the lamps had just been lit, Wang was lying on his couch with his shoes on. Suddenly he saw a tiny man, about three inches tall, come in from outside. It circled once and went straight out again. A moment later two tiny men carried in a coffin about four inches long and set it down on a bench. Before they had finished laying it in place, a woman came in with several menservants and maids, all as small as the others. The woman wore mourning dress, with a hemp cord tied round her waist and a cloth wrapped about her head. She hid her mouth behind her sleeve and wept in a thin whine, like the buzzing of a big fly. Wang watched from the corner of his eye for a long time. His hair stood on end, as if his whole body were covered in frost. Then he gave a great shout and ran, tumbled down under the bed, and lay there shaking, unable to get up. Everyone in the school heard him and came running. The figures in the hall had vanished.
