萊州秦生，製藥酒，誤投毒味，未忍傾棄，封而置之。積年餘，夜適思飲，而無所得酒。忽憶所藏，啟封嗅之，芳烈噴溢，腸癢涎流，不可制止。取琖將嘗，妻苦勸諫。生笑曰：「快飲而死，勝於饞渴而死多矣。」一琖既盡，倒瓶再斟。妻覆其瓶，滿屋流溢。生伏地而牛飲之。少時，腹痛口噤，中夜而卒。妻號泣，為備棺木，行入殮矣。次夜，忽有美人入，身長不滿三尺，逕就靈寢，以甌水灌之，豁然頓甦。叩而詰之，曰：「我狐仙也。適丈夫入陳家竊酒醉死，往救而歸，偶過君家，彼憐君子與己同病，故使妾以餘藥活之也。」言訖，不見。

A scholar of Laizhou named Qin was making medicinal wine when he put in a poisonous ingredient by mistake. He could not bear to pour it away, so he sealed it up and put it aside. A year or more went by. One night he happened to want a drink, and there was no wine to be had. Suddenly he remembered what he had stored away. He broke the seal and sniffed: a rich, fierce fragrance came gushing out. His belly itched and his mouth watered, and he could not hold himself back. He took a cup and was about to taste it when his wife begged him bitterly not to. Qin laughed. “Better to drink my fill and die than to die of thirst and craving!” He drained one cup and tipped the bottle to pour another. His wife knocked the bottle over, and the wine ran all over the room. Qin got down on the floor and lapped it up like an ox. Soon his belly ached and his jaws locked, and in the middle of the night he died. His wife wailed and wept. She got a coffin ready for him and was about to lay him in it. The next night a beautiful woman suddenly came in, less than three feet tall. She went straight to where the body lay and poured a bowl of water into his mouth, and all at once he came back to life. They kowtowed to her and asked who she was. “I am a fox immortal,” she said. “My husband went into the Chen house just now to steal wine and drank himself to death. I went and saved him, and on our way home we happened to pass your house. He pitied you, sir, for having the same weakness as himself, so he had me revive you with the medicine that was left.” With that she vanished.
