The Cloth Merchant

A line drawing in the manner of a late-Qing lithographed edition: on a country roadside by day, a cloth merchant and a short-jacketed runner sit facing each other across a small wooden table under a large old pine, the runner holding out and pointing at an unrolled paper warrant while the startled merchant leans back with one hand raised, with a travelling bundle, umbrella and bolt of cloth on the ground and a winding road, fields, hills and a thatched village behind.
