The Hanged Ghost

A line drawing in the manner of a late-Qing lithographed edition: at night in a plain inn guest room, a young wife seated on a round stool raises a hairpin to her hair knot before a mirror and a lit candle, a young maid stands beside her holding a ewer and basin, and a travelling scholar on a curtained bed at the right props himself on one elbow and watches, with a lattice window, a high-backed chair with a bundle, and a book-box and shoes by the bed.

A scholar named Fan was staying the night at an inn. After supper he lit a candle and lay down to doze in his clothes. Suddenly a maid came in and laid a bundle of clothes on the chair. She also set out a mirror case and a box of hairpins, one by one, on the table, and then went away. In a moment a young woman came out of the inner room. She opened the box and the case and combed and smoothed her hair before the mirror; then she put it up in a knot, then fixed in her pins, and turned this way and that, studying her reflection for a long time. The maid came back, brought a ewer and poured water for her to wash. When she had washed, the maid held out a towel, and after that carried the water away. The woman undid the bundle and took out a skirt and a cape, bright and newly made, and put them on. She closed the front, straightened the collar, and fastened everything with great care. Fan said nothing, but he wondered at it. She must be a runaway wife, he thought, putting on her finery to go to one of the guests. When she was dressed, she took out a long sash, hung it over the beam and tied it. Fan was startled. Calmly the woman rose on the tips of her two little bound feet, stretched out her neck and put it into the noose. The moment the sash touched her, her eyes closed, her brows shot up, her tongue hung two inches out of her mouth, and her face changed horribly, like a ghost’s. Fan, terrified, ran out and shouted for the innkeeper. When they went to look, there was nothing there. The innkeeper said, “Some time ago my son’s wife hanged herself in that room. Could it have been her?” Ah! How strange! Even dead, she still goes through it all. How is this to be explained?
