The Wild Dog

A line drawing in the manner of a late-Qing lithographed edition: on a moonlit night in a battle-scarred field beside a dirt road, a kerchiefed villager leaps up and raises a stone to strike a tall dog-headed creature in a tattered robe, which clutches its muzzle and recoils, while a fallen soldier lies on his back beside a dropped spear, with a torn banner, a split drum, a dented helmet and bare trees around them.

In the Yu Qi rebellion, people were cut down like hemp. A villager named Li Hualong was fleeing home from the mountains when the army came marching through by night. Fearing the fire that burns jade and stone alike, and with nowhere to hide in time, he lay stiff among the dead, pretending to be a corpse. The soldiers went by until the last of them was gone, but he did not dare come out at once. Suddenly he saw the corpses, headless, armless, rise and stand like a forest. One of them, whose severed head still hung on its shoulders, spoke: “The wild dog is coming. What can we do?” The corpses answered raggedly, “What can we do!” In a moment they all toppled over at once, and there was silence. Li, still shaking with fright, was about to get up when a creature came along with the head of a beast and the body of a man. It crouched to gnaw at the heads, sucking out the brains of one after another. Li, terrified, hid his head under a corpse. The creature came and pawed at Li’s shoulder, trying to get at his head. Li pressed himself down with all his strength so that it could not. Then the creature shoved aside the corpse that covered him, and his head was bare. In terror, Li groped by his waist, found a big stone the size of a bowl, and gripped it. The creature bent down to bite. Li sprang up with a great shout and struck at its head, hitting it in the mouth. The creature howled like an owl and ran, clutching its mouth in pain and spitting blood along the road. Li went to look, and in the blood he found two teeth, curved in the middle and sharp at the tip, more than four inches long. He carried them home in his robe and showed them to people, but no one knew what creature they came from.
