A line drawing in the manner of a late-Qing lithographed edition: in the main hall of a county court by day, a magistrate in a black cap and badged robe sits behind a cloth-draped desk before a screen painted with sun, waves and rocks, and points at a bound servant kneeling with bowed head and clasped hands, while a weeping old man kneels at the left with one hand to his face and the other held open in appeal.

Sun Wuli had a page-boy who slept alone in a room. One night, half-dreaming, he was carried off by someone. He came to a palace and saw Yama seated on high. Yama looked at him and said, “A mistake. This is not the one.” He had the boy sent back. Once home, the boy was terrified and moved to sleep somewhere else. A fellow servant named Guo An saw the bed standing empty and lay down in it. Another servant, Li Lu, had an old grudge against the page-boy and had long been waiting to settle it. That night he came in with a knife, felt for the sleeper, took him for the page-boy, and killed him. Guo An’s father brought a complaint to the authorities. Chen Qishan was then magistrate of my county, and he was not at all hard on the killer. Guo wailed and cried, “Half my life gone, and this was my only son! How am I to live now?” So Chen gave him Li Lu to be his son. Guo swallowed the wrong and withdrew. What is strange here is not that the page-boy saw ghosts. What is strange is the way Chen judged the case.
