Spurting Water

A line drawing in the manner of a late-Qing lithographed edition: on a moonlit night in an overgrown, run-down courtyard, an old lady and two young maids huddle at the lattice window of the front hall and peer through a small hole in the paper, while a hunchbacked old woman with a tall topknot and wild white hair strides across the cracked paving with high crane-like steps, spraying a fine stream of water from her mouth, beside a dry well, a broken wall and a gnarled old tree.

When Master Song Yushu of Laiyang was a secretary in one of the ministries, the house he rented was very desolate and run-down. One night two maids were sleeping in the hall with his mother, the old lady, when they heard a puff, puff from the courtyard, like a tailor spraying water. The old lady urged the maids to get up. They poked a hole in the window paper and peeped out. They saw an old woman, short and hunchbacked, with white hair like a broom, done up in a single topknot about two feet tall. She was going round and round the courtyard with long, quick strides like a crane’s, spurting as she went, and the water never ran out. The maids came back aghast and told the old lady. She got up in alarm too, and with the two maids holding her up she went to the window, and all three watched. Suddenly the old woman came right up to the window and spurted straight through the lattice. The window paper burst, and all three fell down. No one else in the house knew. When the sun was up in the east, the household gathered. They knocked at the door and got no answer, and only then took fright. They forced the door open and went in, and found the mistress and the two maids lying dead side by side in the one room. One maid was still warm below the breast. They raised her up and poured something down her throat, and after a while she came round and told them what she had seen. Master Song arrived, so stricken with grief and rage that he wished himself dead. They searched carefully at the spot where the old woman had vanished. When they had dug down more than three feet, white hair began to show; digging further, they found a corpse, just as she had looked, its face fat and swollen as if alive. Song had it struck. Flesh and bone all fell to pulp, and inside the skin was nothing but clear water.
