Eating Stones

In the household of old Master Wang Qinwen of Xincheng there was a groom whose surname was Wang. As a boy he had gone into Mount Lao to study the Way. After a long time he stopped eating cooked food. He ate only pine nuts and white stones, and hair grew all over his body. Some years later, thinking of his aged mother, he came home, and little by little went back to cooked food; but he still ate stones as before. He would hold a stone up to the sun and look at it, and at once he knew whether it was sweet or bitter, sour or salty. He ate it as if it were taro. When his mother died he went back into the mountains. It has now been another seventeen or eighteen years.
