Wang Qihou, one of the licentiates of Xincheng, was the great-grandson of the provincial commissioner Wang Xiangkun, styled Zhongyu. One day he saw a woman come into his room, fat, dark and plain. She came up smiling and sat on his couch, very lewd in her manner. Wang sent her off; she would not go. From then on he saw her whenever he sat or lay down. But his mind was firm, and he never wavered. The woman grew angry and slapped his face with a crack, though it did not hurt much. She hung her sash from the beam, seized him by the hair and pulled him to hang himself beside her. Without knowing what he did, Wang went and put himself under the beam and stretched out his neck as if he were hanging. People saw that his feet did not touch the ground: he stood stiff in the air. Yet even so he could not die. After that he went mad. All at once he would say, “She is going to jump into the river with me!” and run wildly for the river, and he stopped only when they dragged him back. It went on in a hundred ways, several times a day, and neither spells nor medicine did any good. One day he suddenly saw an armed man come in with a chain looped in his hand, who shouted in anger, “This is an honest, simple man. How dare you torment him!” He chained the woman by the neck and went out with her through the window lattice. As soon as she was outside the window she no longer had a human shape: her eyes flashed like lightning, and her mouth was blood-red and as big as a basin. Wang remembered that inside the gate of the City God’s temple there were four clay ghosts, and she looked exactly like one of them. With that his illness was gone.
