魘昧之術，不一其道，或投美餌，紿之食之，則人迷罔，相從而去，俗名曰：「打絮巴」，江南謂之「扯絮」。小兒無知，輒受其害。又有變人為畜者，名曰「造畜」。此術江北猶少，河以南輒有之。揚州旅店中，有一人牽驢五頭，暫縶櫪下，云：「我少選即返。」兼囑：「勿令飲啖。」遂去。驢暴日中，蹄嚙殊喧。主人牽著涼處。驢見水，奔之，遂縱飲之。一滾塵，化為婦人。怪之，詰其所由，舌強而不能答。乃匿諸室中。既而驢主至，驅五羊于院中，驚問驢之所在。主人曳客坐，便進餐飲，且云：「客姑飯，驢即至矣。」主人出，悉飲五羊，輾轉皆童子。陰報郡，遣役捕獲，遂械殺之。

The arts of bewitchment take many forms. Some put out a tempting bait and trick a person into eating it; the person is then bewildered and follows the sorcerer away. This is commonly called “beating the fluff”; south of the Yangzi they call it “pulling the fluff”. Children, knowing no better, often fall victim to it. There is also an art of changing people into beasts, called “making beasts”. North of the Yangzi it is still rare, but south of the Yellow River it is often met with. At an inn in Yangzhou a man came leading five donkeys. He tied them up at the trough for the time being. “I’ll be back shortly,” he said, and added, “Don’t let them eat or drink.” Then he left. The donkeys stood out in the glaring sun, kicking and biting and making a great din. The innkeeper led them into the shade. Seeing water, the donkeys rushed at it, so he let them drink their fill. With one roll in the dust they turned into women. Astonished, he asked them how this had come about, but their tongues were stiff and they could not answer. So he hid them in a room. Presently the donkeys’ owner came back, driving five sheep into the yard, and asked in alarm where his donkeys were. The innkeeper drew the guest to a seat and served him food and drink. “Eat first, sir,” he said. “The donkeys will be here in a moment.” The innkeeper went out and gave water to all five sheep. They rolled over, and every one was a boy. He secretly reported it to the prefecture, which sent runners to seize the man, and he was clapped in irons and put to death.
