A Certain Gentleman

A line drawing in the manner of a late-Qing lithographed edition: In the hall of the King of the Underworld, a bearded king in a beaded crown sits behind a draped high table turning a page of a register, a capped clerk beside the table reports to him with a register in hand, a scholar kneels before the table looking up, and a plain attendant stands behind with a white sheepskin over his arms, with a wave-pattern screen, hide-hung racks, a lantern and an open doorway in the background.

A certain gentleman of Shaanxi, who took the jinshi degree in the xinchou year, could remember his former life. He used to say that in that life he had been a scholar and had died in middle age. After death he saw the King of the Underworld judging cases. The cauldrons, the pans and the vats of boiling oil were all just as people on earth describe them. In the east corner of the hall stood several racks hung with the skins of pigs, sheep, dogs and horses. The clerk with the register called out names. Some were sentenced to be horses, some to be pigs. Each was stripped naked, and a skin was taken from the rack and put on him. Before long it was the gentleman’s turn. He heard the King say, “This one should be a sheep.” A ghost brought a white sheepskin and pressed it down over his body. The clerk reported, “He once saved a man from death.” The King looked through the record again and declared, “Spare him. His wrongs are many, but this good deed can redeem them.” So the ghost set about stripping the hide off him again. But the skin had already stuck to his body and would not budge. Two ghosts seized his arms, pressed down on his chest, and tore it off by force. The pain was beyond words. The hide came away in strips and would not come off clean. When it was off, a patch of sheepskin the size of a palm was still stuck near his shoulder. After the gentleman was born again, a tuft of wool grew on his back. When it was cut off, it grew back.
