On the River

A line drawing in the manner of a late-Qing lithographed edition: on a moonlit night a travelling boat lies moored in the middle of a wide river, a sword-bearing scholar in a wide-sleeved gown stands on the foredeck watching a small flame on the water, a young servant boy crouches at the gunwale pointing at it, and an old boatman at the stern leans on a long bamboo pole and speaks calmly, with a reed-matting cabin roof, coiled rope, a bucket, far-shore reeds and willows, a thin moon and scattered stars.

Wang Shengyu was travelling south, and one night moored his boat in the middle of the river. He had gone to bed, but the moonlight was as white as silk and he could not sleep, so he had his boy servant massage him. Suddenly he heard what sounded like a small child walking on the roof of the boat, the reed matting crackling underfoot. It came from far off at the stern and drew nearer and nearer the cabin door. Fearing robbers, Wang got up quickly and asked the boy. The boy had heard it too. While they were talking, they saw a man lying flat on the roof, his head hanging down, peering into the cabin. Wang was horrified. With his hand on his sword he shouted for the servants, and the whole boat woke. He told them what he had seen. Some thought he was mistaken, but in a moment the sound came again. They all got up and looked about: there was no one at all, only a few scattered stars, a bright moon, and the broad waves of the river. They sat in the boat, and soon they saw a green fire like a lamp burst up out of the water and drift along with the current. As it came near the boat, the fire went out at once. Then a dark figure rose up suddenly and stood upright on the water, and moved along gripping the side of the boat with its hands. “That’s the thing!” they all shouted. They meant to shoot it, but as they drew their bows it dropped into the water and could not be seen. They asked the boatmen. “This is an old battlefield,” said the boatmen. “Ghosts come and go here all the time. There’s nothing strange in it.”
