Chapter Twenty-Four · Journey to the West

On Longevity Mountain, a great immortal hosts an old friend; At Five Villages Abbey, Pilgrim steals the ginseng fruit

A line drawing in the manner of a late-Qing lithographed edition: in a walled garden, Sun Wukong crouches in the fork of a huge broad-leaved tree, knocking a small hanging fruit with a slender striker in his right hand while his left hand holds up the front of his tunic to catch it, glancing back with a sly grin; a round moon gate in a tiled wall, garden rocks and vegetable beds lie below.

Now, the three went deeper into the wood and found the Idiot bound to a tree, crying out again and again in unbearable pain. Pilgrim came forward, laughing. “What a fine son-in-law! At this hour you still haven’t got up to thank your new relations, or gone to Master to announce the happy news. Still putting on an acrobatic show here, are you? Hey! Where’s your mother-in-law? Where’s your wife? A fine son-in-law indeed, trussed up and dangling as though under torture!” Seeing him come to taunt and shame him, the Idiot clenched his teeth, endured the pain and dared not cry out. Sha Monk could scarcely bear the sight. He put down the luggage, went forward and untied the cords to rescue him. The Idiot could only kowtow and bow to them, his shame more than he could endure. There is a lyric to prove it, to the tune ‘The moon over the West River’:

Lust is a sword that wounds the body;crave it, and disaster is sure to come.A lovely girl of twice eight years, so fair of face and dress,is fiercer still than a yaksha. You have only your original capital, with no little profit to add to your purse.Guard that capital and store it safely;hold firm, and never let it be squandered.

Bajie gathered some earth as an incense offering and bowed towards the sky. Pilgrim asked, “Did you recognize those Bodhisattvas?” Bajie said, “I had already fainted and lost my senses. My eyes were swimming — how could I tell who they were?” Pilgrim handed him the written slip. When Bajie saw the hymn on it, he was more ashamed than ever. Sha Monk laughed. “What a privilege for our second brother! You brought four Bodhisattvas here to become your relations.” Bajie said, “Little brother, don’t mention it again. I’ve made a disgrace of myself. From now on I’ll never dare behave so recklessly. Even if the work breaks my bones, I’ll bear the load on my shoulders and follow Master to the Western Regions.” Sanzang said, “That is the right thing to say.”

Pilgrim led Master onto the main road. After they had travelled a good while, a high mountain suddenly barred their way. Sanzang reined in his horse and stayed his whip. “Disciples, there’s a mountain ahead. We must take care, for demons may be up to mischief and harm our party.” Pilgrim said, “With the three of us here in front of your horse, what demons need you fear?” Reassured, the elder rode on. And what a fine mountain it was:

Its heights rise to the utmost, its mighty mass stands rugged and imposing. Its roots join the veins of Mount Kunlun;its summit brushes the cloudy heavens.White cranes often roost in its junipers and cypresses;dark apes hang from its creepers and vines.Sunlight strikes the clear woods, where layer upon layer of red mist curls in a thousand strands;wind springs from shaded ravines, where ten thousand ribbons of coloured cloud drift and fly.Secluded birds sing at random among green bamboos;splendid pheasants vie among wild flowers. There are Thousand-Year Peak, Five Blessings Peak and Lotus Peak, lofty and stern, sending out rays of light;Ten-Thousand-Year Rock, Tiger-Tooth Rock and Three Heavens Rock, jutting and jagged, breathing auspicious vapour.Fine grasses grow before the cliffs;plum fragrance scents the ridges.Thorns stand thick and dense;sacred mushrooms and orchids breathe a delicate perfume. In deep woods, hawks and phoenixes gather a thousand birds;in ancient caves, qilin rule ten thousand beasts.Affectionate streams turn and wind, looking back again and again;unbroken peaks circle in their own folds, range upon range.Green locust trees, mottled bamboos and blue-green pines sway softly, vying in luxuriance for a thousand years;white plums, red peaches and emerald willows blaze with beautythrough the three months of spring.Dragons sing and tigers roar;cranes dance and apes cry.Deer emerge from flowers;blue luan birds call towards the sun.Truly an immortal mountain, a blessed land:Penglai and the Celestial Garden are no finer.Flowers open and fall in the scenery on its heights;clouds come and go around the peaks upon its ridges.
