Now, the Six Stalwart Commanders came out of the cave and followed the road southwest. Pilgrim thought to himself, “They mean to invite the old Great King to eat my Master. That old Great King must be the Bull Demon King. When Old Sun knew him years ago, we were truly of one heart and mind, the closest of friends. Now I have returned to the true path, while he remains an evil demon. Though we have been apart a long time, I still remember his looks. Let Old Sun change into the Bull Demon King and play a trick on him. We shall see how it goes.”
好行者，躲離了六個小妖，展開翅，飛向前邊，離小妖有十數里遠近，搖身一變，變作個牛魔王；拔下幾根毫毛，叫：「變！」即變作幾個小妖。在那山凹裡，駕鷹牽犬，搭弩張弓，充作打圍的樣子，等候那六健將。
好行者，躲离了六个小妖，展开翅，飞向前边，离小妖有十数里远近，摇身一变，变作个牛魔王；拔下几根毫毛，叫：「变！」即变作几个小妖。在那山凹里，驾鹰牵犬，搭弩张弓，充作打围的样子，等候那六健将。
Splendid Pilgrim! Keeping clear of the six little demons, he spread his wings and flew ahead until he was a dozen li or so beyond them. He shook himself and changed into the Bull Demon King, plucked out a few hairs and called, “Transform!” At once they became several little demons. There in a hollow of the mountain, with hawks on their arms, hounds on leashes, crossbows cocked and bows drawn, they made a show of hunting and waited for the Six Stalwart Commanders.
那一夥廝拖廝扯正行時，忽然看見牛魔王坐在中間，慌得興烘掀、掀烘興撲的跪下道：「老大王爺爺在這裡也。」那雲裡霧、霧裡雲、急如火、快如風都是肉眼凡胎，那裡認得真假，也就一同跪倒，磕頭道：「爺爺，小的們是火雲洞聖嬰大王處差來，請老大王爺爺去吃唐僧肉，壽延千紀哩。」行者借口答道：「孩兒們起來，同我回家去，換了衣服來也。」小妖叩頭道：「望爺爺方便，不消回府罷。路程遙遠，恐我大王見責，小的們就此請行。」行者笑道：「好乖兒女。也罷，也罷，向前開路，我和你去來。」六怪抖擻精神，向前喝路。大聖隨後而來。

The band were tugging and pulling one another along when they suddenly saw the Bull Demon King seated in their midst. Rouse-Blaze-Lift and Lift-Blaze-Rouse dropped to their knees in alarm. “Our lord the old Great King is here!” Mist-in-Cloud, Cloud-in-Mist, Quick-as-Fire and Swift-as-Wind all had ordinary mortal eyes and bodies. How could they tell true from false? They too knelt down and kowtowed. “My lord, we little ones have been sent by Great King Holy Infant of Fire Cloud Cave to invite our lord the old Great King to eat the Tang Monk’s flesh and prolong his life by a thousand ages.” Pilgrim answered in an assumed voice, “Rise, little ones. Come home with me while I change my clothes, and then we shall go.” The little demons kowtowed. “We beg you to oblige us, my lord. There is no need to return to your residence. It is a long journey, and we fear our Great King will blame us. We beg you to set out from here.” Pilgrim laughed. “What clever children! Very well, very well. Clear the way ahead, and I shall go with you.” The six monsters roused themselves and went ahead shouting for the road to be cleared. The Great Sage followed behind.
