Chapter Forty-Five · Journey to the West

At the Three Pure Ones Abbey, the Great Sage leaves his name;In the Cart-Delay Kingdom, the Monkey King displays his powers

A line drawing in the manner of a late-Qing lithographed edition: by day, on a tall wooden rain-making altar with pennants streaming in the wind, a crowned young monk sits cross-legged with hands joined and eyes closed behind a table with an incense burner and candles, while below a monkey in a tiger-skin kilt stands with one hand on his hip and thrusts a long iron pole up toward the clouds, where an old woman and a stout topknotted man on a cloud open a huge cloth bag and loose a great wind with swirling leaves, and the roofs and gate tower of a city lie far below.

Now, the Great Sage Sun pinched Sha Monk with his left hand and Zhu Bajie with his right, and the two understood at once. Seated on high, they held their faces stiff and said not a word. Let the Daoists light lamps and torches and inspect them from front and back: the three looked just like gilded clay statues. The Great Immortal Tiger Strength said, “If there is no intruder, how have all the offerings been eaten?” The Great Immortal Deer Strength said, “It certainly looks like a person’s work. Everything with a skin has been peeled, and everything with a stone has had the stone spat out. But why is there no one to be seen?” The Great Immortal Goat Strength said, “Brother, have no doubts. We have been chanting scriptures here day and night with devout hearts, submitting petitions time and again, all in the name of the court. Surely we have moved the Celestial Venerables. The Three Pure Ones themselves must have descended and partaken of these offerings. While their immortal retinue has yet to return and their crane-borne carriage is still here, let us bow and petition the Celestial Venerables for some holy water and golden elixir to present to His Majesty. Would that not bring him long life without end and show the fruits of our labours?” The Great Immortal Tiger Strength said, “Quite right.” He gave orders: “Disciples, strike up the music and chant the scriptures. Bring my ritual robe, too, so that I may pace the Heavenly Stars and offer my prayers.” The young Daoists all obeyed and formed two orderly ranks. A chime rang out with a clang, and together they chanted a scroll of the True Scripture of the Yellow Court and the Way and Its Virtue. The Great Immortal Tiger Strength put on his ritual robe, raised his jade tablet, danced before the images and waved his whisk, then prostrated himself and addressed those above:

“With trembling reverence we bow our headsand take refuge.Your servants uphold the teaching, looking up to your pure emptiness. We destroy the vulgar monksand honour the radiant Way.By imperial decree this precious hall was built;by royal command its courts and chambers. We spread out ample offeringsand hang the dragon banners high. All night we keep the candles burning;all day the incense smoulders.A single sincere heart reaches those above;our humble reverence turns devoutly to you.Now you have graciously descended, and your immortal carriage has yet to leave. We beg a little golden elixir and holy water to present to the court, that the sovereign’s life may endure like the Southern Mountain.”

At these words Bajie grew uneasy and whispered to Pilgrim, “This is our own fault. We ate the food and would not leave, and now we have stayed for all these prayers. How are we to answer?” Pilgrim pinched him again, then suddenly spoke aloud. “Junior immortals of a later generation, stop your prayers for now. We have come from the Peach Banquet and brought no golden elixir or holy water. We shall bestow some when we come another day.” When the Daoists, young and old, heard them speak, every one shook till his robes trembled. “Grandfathers! Living Celestial Venerables have descended to earth! We must not let them go. Whatever it takes, we must ask for a way to live for ever.” The Great Immortal Deer Strength came forward and bowed again:

“We lift the whisk and bow our heads, offering hearts of utmost sincerity.Your humble servants entrust their lives to youand look up to the Three Pure Ones.Since coming to this realm we have promoted the Wayand driven out the monks. The king rejoices in his heartand honours your mystic longevity. At the Great Offering to All Heavenwe read scriptures through the night.Blessed that the Celestial Venerables have not forsaken us,we welcome your sacred carriage to our courts.Bowing low, we beg your remembrance;looking up, we await your glorious favour. You must leave a little holy waterto prolong your disciples’ lives and grant them immortality.”

Sha Monk pinched Pilgrim and whispered, “Brother, they are pressing us hard. Here they are praying again.” Pilgrim said, “Give them some.” Bajie murmured, “Where are we to get it?” Pilgrim said, “Just watch me. Once I have some, you will all have some too.” When the Daoists had finished their pipes and drums, Pilgrim spoke. “Junior immortals of a later generation, you need not prostrate yourselves. If I leave you no holy water, I fear your line of followers will die out. Yet to give it to you is altogether too easy.” At this all the Daoists fell to the ground and knocked their heads on the floor. “We earnestly beg the Celestial Venerables to remember your disciples’ reverence and graciously bestow a little. Your disciples will spread the Way and Its Virtue far and wide, and petition the king to honour the Mystic Gate throughout the realm.” Pilgrim said, “In that case, bring vessels.” The Daoists all bowed their heads in thanks. The Great Immortal Tiger Strength, always eager to outdo the others, had a great vat carried into the hall. The Great Immortal Deer Strength brought an earthenware basin and set it on the offering table. The Great Immortal Goat Strength took the flowers out of a vase and moved it to the middle. Pilgrim said, “Go outside the hall, all of you, and shut the lattice doors. Heaven’s secrets must not be revealed. Then we can leave you some holy water.” The Daoists all knelt below the red steps and closed the hall doors.

Pilgrim stood up, lifted his tiger-skin kilt and pissed a vaseful of rank urine. Zhu Bajie saw him and said delightedly, “Brother, in all these years we have been brothers, this is the one trick we have never tried. After all that food I just ate, I could do with doing this myself.” The Idiot lifted his clothes, and with a roaring rush like the Lüliang Rapids pouring down a chute, he splashed an earthenware basin full of piss. Sha Monk too pissed half a vat. They straightened their clothes and sat upright on high as before. “Junior immortals, receive the holy water.”

The Daoists pushed open the lattice doors, bowed and knocked their heads on the floor in thanks. They carried the vat out, poured the contents of the vase and basin into it, and gave orders: “Disciples, bring a cup so we can taste it.” A young Daoist promptly fetched a teacup and handed it to the old Daoist. The Daoist dipped out a cupful and drank it, wiping his lips and smacking his mouth repeatedly. The Great Immortal Deer Strength said, “Brother, does it taste good?” The old Daoist pursed his lips. “Not very good. There is a salty, rank flavour to it.” The Great Immortal Goat Strength said, “Let me try.” He too took a mouthful. “There is a whiff of pig piss.” Seated above, Pilgrim heard these words and knew the trick had been found out. “I shall show them a trick and leave my name while I am about it.” He cried out:

“Masters of the Way, Masters of the Way,what foolish thoughts you have!Would the Three Pure Onesdescend to the mortal earth?I shall tell youour true names. We are monks of the Great Tang, sent west by imperial command. With nothing to do on this fine night,we came down to your halls. We ate the offeringsand sat about making merry. You bowed before us:how were we to answer? What holy water? What you have drunk is nothing but the piss we pissed!”At this the Daoists blocked the doors, all wielding forks, rakes, brooms, tiles and stones, and struck wildly into the hall without caring where the blows fell.Splendid Pilgrim! He tucked Sha Monk under his left arm and Bajie under his right, burst through the doors and rode the shining clouds straight back to the abbot’s quarters at Wisdom Abyss Monastery. Not daring to disturb Master, the three lay down to sleep again.
