Chapter Eighty · Journey to the West

The Maiden nurtures yang and seeks a mate; The Mind-Ape guards his master and sees through an evil spirit

A line drawing in the manner of a late-Qing lithographed edition: in a sparse pine wood, a young woman in tears is bound to a tree trunk with vines; Zhu Bajie sits dazed on the ground, a hand to his brow and loose vines in the other, while Sun Wukong, staff in hand, points sternly at the woman, and Tang Sanzang, in his crown and robe with his tall staff, stands raising a hand in reproof.

Now, the ruler, ministers and common people of the kingdom of Bhikshu escorted the Tang Monk and his three disciples out of the city. They went twenty li and still could not bear to part. Sanzang finally managed to get out of the carriage. He mounted his horse, said goodbye and went on. Those seeing them off watched until they could no longer make out a trace of them before they returned. The four travelled for a long time, through the last of winter and the whole of spring. They could not take in all the wild flowers and mountain trees, all the fragrant beauty of the landscape. Ahead they saw another high mountain with steep ridges. Sanzang grew alarmed and asked, “Disciples, is there a road through that high mountain ahead? Do be careful.” Pilgrim laughed. “Master, that hardly sounds like someone who has travelled a long road. You sound more like a pampered nobleman’s son, the sort who sits in a well and thinks he has seen the sky. As the old saying goes, ‘Mountains do not bar the road; the road finds its way through the mountains.’ Why ask whether there is a road?” Sanzang said, “Even if mountains do not bar the road, I fear that monsters may lurk among the dangerous heights, and demons emerge from deep within the thickets.” Bajie said, “Set your mind at rest, set your mind at rest. From here it’s not far to the Western Land of Ultimate Bliss. I guarantee peace and no trouble at all.”

As master and disciples talked, they reached the foot of the mountain without noticing. Pilgrim took out his gold-banded cudgel, climbed onto a rocky ledge and called, “Master, here’s a road round the mountain, a lovely easy walk. Come on, come on!” The elder could only put his worries aside and urge his horse forward. Sha Monk said, “Second Brother, take a turn with the baggage.” Bajie duly took it onto his shoulder. Sha Monk held the reins, and their old master sat securely in his carved saddle as they all followed Pilgrim onto the broad road along the cliff. This is what they saw:

Cloud and mist enfold the peaks;murmuring waters surge within the ravine.A hundred flowers scent the road;ten thousand trees stand thick in groves.Green plum fruit, white plum blossom;green willows, red peach bloom.Where cuckoos cry, spring nears its end;purple swallows twitter, the spring altar festival now past.Towering rocks, pines with emerald canopies.A rugged ridge road, lofty crags pierced through with hollows.Sheer walls and hanging cliffs rise steep;creepers, grasses, trees grow lush.A thousand splendid rocks compete like ranks of halberds;ten thousand valleys race their waters toward the distant flood.

Their old master took his time admiring the mountain scenery. Suddenly the birdsong reached his ears, and homesickness stirred again. He turned his horse and called, “Disciples!

The imperial tablet brought the sovereign’s command;beneath a brocade screen I received my travel papers. After viewing the lanterns on the fifteenth, I left the Eastern Land;only then did Heaven and earth part me from the Tang Emperor. No sooner had dragon and tiger met with wind and cloudthan master and disciples became a troop struggling with stubborn mounts.I have travelled all twelve peaks of the Wu Mountains;when shall I face the reigning Emperor again?”

Pilgrim said, “Master, you are always thinking of home. You’re nothing like a man who has left his household to become a monk. Set your mind at rest and keep going; don’t worry so much. The ancients said, ‘To win wealth and honour in life, you must work hard enough to die.’” Sanzang said, “What you say is reasonable, disciple, but I still don’t know where the road to the Western Heaven lies.” Bajie said, “Master, our Buddha can’t bear to part with those scriptures of the Three Baskets. Knowing we mean to take them away, he must have moved. Otherwise, why do we never get there?” Sha Monk said, “Don’t talk nonsense. Just keep following Elder Brother. Put in the time, and one day we’re bound to arrive.”

While master and disciples chatted at ease, they came upon a great forest of dark pines. The Tang Monk grew frightened and called again, “Wukong, we’ve only just come through that rugged mountain road. How have we run into this deep Black Pine Forest? Do take care.” Pilgrim said, “What’s there to fear?” Sanzang said, “What are you saying? ‘Do not trust that the upright are wholly upright; beware lest the kindly prove unkind.’ I’ve passed through several pine forests with you, but none was as deep and vast as this. Look:

Thickly ranked from east to west,in rows from south to north.Thickly ranked from east to west, they reach the clouds;in rows from south to north, they enter the blue heavens.Dense thorns knot round on every side;creepers coil through branches, high and low.Vines twine round kudzu;kudzu twines round vines.Vines twine round kudzu, and travellers east and west can barely pass;Kudzu twines round vines—how canmerchants north and south advance?Live half a year within this forest, and how could you tell sun from moon?Walk several li,and not a star of the Dipper can be seen.Look at the thousand sights within its shade, the myriad clumps of flowers in its sun.And there are thousand-year-old scholar trees, ten-thousand-year-old junipers, pines that bear the cold, mountain peaches, wild peonies and hardy hibiscus, densely clustered, heaped in layers, such a tangled profusion that an immortal could not paint it.Hear, too, the voices of a hundred birds:Parrots whistle, cuckoos cry;Magpies dart through branches, crows feed their parents;Golden orioles fly and dance,many-tongued birds tune their notes;Partridges call, purple swallows chatter;Mynas learn to speak like people, and gentleman thrushes even read the scriptures. And there are great striped beasts swishing their tails, tigers gnashing their teeth;Old foxes and badgers dress as ladies;ancient grey wolves roar and shake the woods.Even Heavenly King Li the Pagoda-Bearer would lose his wits here, for all his power to subdue demons.”

The Great Sage Sun was openly unafraid. He went ahead with his iron cudgel, hacked a broad road through and led the Tang Monk straight into the depths of the forest. They travelled at leisure for half a day, without finding a way out. The Tang Monk called, “Disciple, ever since we headed west we’ve met countless dangerous mountains and forests. Fortunately this place is peaceful and lovely, and all has been quiet along the way. The rare flowers and plants here are truly pleasing. I want to sit here for a while, first to rest the horse, and second because I’m hungry. Go somewhere and beg a little vegetarian food for me.” Pilgrim said, “Master, please dismount. Old Sun will go and beg some food.” The elder did dismount, and Bajie tied the horse to a tree. Sha Monk set down the baggage, took out the begging bowl and handed it to Pilgrim. Pilgrim said, “Master, sit comfortably and don’t be afraid. I’ll be back as soon as I’ve gone.” Sanzang sat upright beneath the pines, while Bajie and Sha Monk went off to amuse themselves looking for flowers and fruit.
