Chapter Eighty-One · Journey to the West

At the Sea-Calming Chan Monastery, the Mind-Ape recognizes a demon; In Black Pine Forest, the three disciples search for their master

A line drawing in the manner of a late-Qing lithographed edition: in a black pine forest, Sun Wukong stands in his three-headed, six-armed battle shape, three of his hands gripping iron staffs, while the mountain spirit and the earth spirit kneel at his feet with hands clasped; Zhu Bajie and Sha Wujing stand to one side, watching in amazement.

Now, Sanzang and his disciples arrived at the Sea-Calming Chan Monastery. The monks greeted them and prepared a vegetarian meal. When the four had eaten, the woman too had taken some food and recovered a little strength. Gradually darkness fell, and lamps were lit in the abbot’s quarters. The monks wanted both to ask the Tang Monk about his journey to fetch the scriptures and to feast their eyes on the woman, so they crowded together in rows beneath the lamplight. Sanzang asked the lama he had first met, “Abbot, when we leave your honoured mountain tomorrow, what is the road west like?” The monk dropped to both knees. Alarmed, the elder caught hold of him. “Please rise, Abbot. I’m asking about the road. Why do you kneel?” The monk said, “Venerable Master, the road west tomorrow is level and easy. You need not worry. But there is something awkward just now. I wanted to mention it as soon as you came in, but feared offending your great dignity. Only now, after the meal, do I dare speak. You have come from the east, and your long journey has been hard. All of you can rest comfortably in this little monk’s rooms. But this lady Bodhisattva is a difficulty: I don’t know where to ask her to sleep.” Sanzang said, “Abbot, do not suspect my disciples and me of any improper intentions. This morning, passing through Black Pine Forest, we found this woman tied to a tree. My disciple Sun Wukong refused to rescue her, but I stirred my heart toward awakening and saved her. Now that we are here, you may send her wherever you wish to sleep.” The monk thanked him. “Since you are so accommodating, Master, let us ask her to go to the Hall of Heavenly Kings. We can make her a bed of straw behind the venerable Heavenly King and have her sleep there.” Sanzang said, “Very good, very good.” The young monks then led the woman behind the hall to sleep. The elder stayed in the abbot’s quarters and asked the abbots to go about their own affairs. They all dispersed. Sanzang told Wukong, “You’ve worked hard. Go to bed early and get up early.” They all slept together, guarding their master and not daring to leave his side. Night deepened. Truly:

The Jade Rabbit rises high, all sounds fall still;Heaven’s streets lie silent, no one walks abroad. The gleaming Milky Way is bright with stars;drums sound from the watchtower, hurrying on the changing watches.

We need not speak of that night’s talk. At daybreak Pilgrim rose and told Bajie and Sha Monk to get the baggage and horse ready, then went to ask his master to set out. The elder was still sleeping soundly. Pilgrim went up and called, “Master!” His master lifted his head a little but could not answer. Pilgrim asked, “Master, what is it?” The elder groaned. “Why is my head so dizzy, my eyes so swollen, and every bit of skin and bone aching?” Hearing this, Bajie reached out to feel him. He was a little feverish. The Idiot laughed. “I know what it is. Last night he saw the food was free, ate a few extra bowls, then flopped down to sleep with his head drooping low. He’s given himself indigestion.” Pilgrim shouted, “Nonsense! Let me ask Master what’s really wrong.” Sanzang said, “I got up in the middle of the night to relieve myself and didn’t put my hat on. I think the wind caught me.” Pilgrim said, “That sounds more like it. Can you travel now?” Sanzang said, “I can’t even sit up. How can I mount a horse? But we’re losing time on the road!” Pilgrim said, “Master, what are you saying? As the saying goes, ‘A teacher for a day is a father for life.’ We are your disciples, which makes us as good as your sons. Another saying goes, ‘Raising sons takes no lavish gold or silver; all that matters is that they respond with feeling when the time comes.’ If you’re unwell, why talk of delaying the journey? What harm is there in waiting patiently a few days?” The brothers all waited on their master. Before they knew it, morning had gone, noon had come, dusk was here again; a pleasant night had barely passed before dawn stole in once more.

Time flew, and three days had soon passed. That day their master struggled up a little and called, “Wukong, these past two days I’ve been so gravely ill that I haven’t asked you: has anyone taken food to that lady Bodhisattva we saved from death?” Pilgrim laughed. “Why bother about her? Look after your own illness first.” Sanzang said, “Quite right, quite right. Help me up, fetch my paper, brush and ink, and borrow an inkstone from the monastery.” Pilgrim asked, “What for?” The elder said, “I want to write a letter and seal it up with my travel papers. You must take it to the court at Chang’an for me and see Emperor Taizong.” Pilgrim said, “That’s easy. Old Sun may be no good at other things, but when it comes to delivering letters, I’m the best in the world. Get the letter ready and give it to me. One somersault will take me to Chang’an to hand it to the Tang Emperor, and another will bring me back before your brush and inkstone have even dried. But why are you sending a letter? Recite what you mean to say first. There’s time enough to write it afterward.” Tears fell from the elder’s eyes. “I shall write:

Bajie came forward. “Elder Brother, Master says he’s unwell and you keep saying he’s well. That’s very awkward. We should make our plans while there’s time: sell the horse, pawn the baggage, buy a coffin, see him buried and break up the party.” Pilgrim said, “The Idiot’s talking nonsense again. You don’t understand. Master is the second disciple of our Buddha. He was originally called Elder Golden Cicada. He treated the Buddha’s Dharma lightly, and so he must suffer this great ordeal.” Bajie said, “Brother, since Master slighted the Dharma and was banished to the Eastern Land, he’s been reborn as a man in that sea of right and wrong, that arena of quarrels. He vowed to go to the Western Heaven to worship the Buddha and seek the scriptures. Every demon he meets ties him up, every monster hangs him from a beam. He’s suffered more than enough. Why make him fall ill as well?” Pilgrim said, “What do you know? Our old master failed to listen when the Buddha preached the Dharma. He nodded off, lost his footing and trod on a grain of rice with his left foot. When he came down to this world, that meant he had to suffer these three days of illness.” Bajie said in alarm, “With all the food Old Zhu spills and scatters when he eats, who knows how many years I’ll have to spend sick!” Pilgrim said, “Brother, the Buddha doesn’t hold ordinary beings like you to the same account. You don’t understand that either. As the poem says:

‘Hoeing the grain beneath the midday sun, sweat drips onto the earth below.Who knows that the food upon the plate, each single grain, is bitter toil?’

Master has only today to get through. Tomorrow he’ll be well.” Sanzang said, “Today is different from yesterday. My throat is terribly thirsty. Find me some cool water wherever you can.” Pilgrim said, “He’s better! If Master wants water, he’s getting better. I’ll go and fetch it.”
