Chapter Eighty-Two · Journey to the West

The Maiden seeks yang; The primal spirit guards the Way

A line drawing in the manner of a late-Qing lithographed edition: In a walled peach garden by day, a young monk in a crown and patchwork robe offers a ripe peach in both hands to a young woman with a high hairpinned bun and flowing scarves; she holds a green peach in one hand and reaches for his with the other, smiling, beneath a fruit-laden peach tree with a round moon gate, garden rocks and flowering bushes behind them.

Now, Bajie leaped down the mountain and found a narrow path. He followed it for five or six li, then suddenly saw two female demons drawing water at a well. How did he know they were demons? On their heads they wore coifs woven from fine bamboo strips, a chi and two or three cun high—quite out of fashion. The Idiot went up and called, “Demons!” At this the two grew furious and said to one another, “This monk has no manners! We don’t even know him. We’ve never been on joking terms. Why does he call us demons?” In their anger they swung the pole they used to carry the water and struck at his head.

The Idiot had no weapon in his hands and could not ward off the blows. After taking several whacks, he covered his head and ran back up the mountain. “Brother, let’s go back! The demons are fierce!” Pilgrim asked, “How fierce?” Bajie said, “Two female demons were drawing water at a well in the hollow. I only called out to them once, and they hit me three or four times with their carrying pole.” Pilgrim asked, “What did you call them?” Bajie said, “I called them demons.” Pilgrim laughed. “They didn’t hit you enough.” Bajie said, “Thanks for your concern! My head’s swollen, and you still say it wasn’t enough!” Pilgrim said, “With gentleness you can go anywhere under heaven; with stubborn force you can’t move an inch. They are the demons who live here, and we are monks from far away. Even if you were all hands from head to foot, you ought to show a little courtesy. You go up and call them demons—if they don’t hit you, are they supposed to hit me? Ritual and music come first in human affairs.” Bajie said, “Now I understand even less.” Pilgrim said, “You’ve been eating people in the mountains since you were little. Do you know about the two kinds of wood?” Bajie said, “No. What kinds?” Pilgrim said, “One is poplar, the other sandalwood. Poplar is soft by nature. A skilled craftsman takes it and carves a sacred image or a Buddha, gilds it and builds up the painted ornament, inlays jade and adds flowers. Ten thousand people burn incense and bow before it. What boundless blessings it receives! Sandalwood is hard and unyielding. The oil mill takes it to make a press wedge, puts an iron hoop round its head and pounds it down with an iron hammer. Its very hardness brings it all that suffering.” Bajie said, “Brother, if only you’d told me these fine words earlier! Then I wouldn’t have been beaten.” Pilgrim said, “Go back and find out the truth from them.” Bajie said, “They’ll recognize me now.” Pilgrim said, “Go in another shape.” Bajie said, “Brother, suppose I do change shape. How should I ask them?” Pilgrim said, “Change shape, go up to them and make a bow. See how old they are. If they’re about our age, call them ‘Miss’; if they’re older, call them ‘Granny.’” Bajie laughed. “What bad luck! We’ve come all this way, and now we have to claim them as relations?” Pilgrim said, “You’re not claiming kinship. You’re drawing them out. If they’ve taken Master, we can act; if they haven’t, why waste time that we could spend looking elsewhere?” Bajie said, “That makes sense. I’ll go again.”

That fine Idiot tucked his rake into his waistband, went down into the hollow and shook himself into a fat, dark-skinned monk. Swaying as he walked, he came up to the demons and made a deep bow with a loud greeting. “Grannies, this poor monk bows his head to you.” The two said with pleasure, “Now this monk is a good one! He knows how to bow and how to address us.” They asked, “Elder, where have you come from?” Bajie said, “Where have you come from?” They asked, “Where are you going?” He said, “Where are you going?” They asked, “What is your name?” He answered, “What is my name?” The demons laughed. “This monk’s pleasant enough, but he tells us nothing about himself. He only repeats whatever comes to his lips.” Bajie said, “Grannies, what are you drawing water for?” They said, “Monk, you don’t know. Our old mistress carried a Tang Monk into the cave last night and wants to entertain him. The water in our cave isn’t clean, so she sent the two of us here for this fine water in which yin and yang mingle. We’re preparing a vegetarian feast of fruit and vegetables for the Tang Monk. This evening she means to marry him.”
