卻說那院中幾個鐵匠因連日辛苦，夜間俱自睡了。及天明起來打造，篷下不見了三般兵器，一個個呆掙神驚，四下尋找。只見那三個王子出宮來看，那鐵匠一齊磕頭道：「小主啊，神師的三般兵器，都不知那裡去了。」
却说那院中几个铁匠因连日辛苦，夜间俱自睡了。及天明起来打造，篷下不见了三般兵器，一个个呆挣神惊，四下寻找。只见那三个王子出宫来看，那铁匠一齐磕头道：「小主啊，神师的三般兵器，都不知那里去了。」
Now, the blacksmiths in the courtyard had worked hard for several days, and that night they all went to sleep. When they got up at dawn to begin forging again, the three weapons were gone from beneath the shed. Every man stood dumbfounded and alarmed, then searched in all directions. Just then the three princes came out of the palace to see how the work was going. The blacksmiths all knocked their heads on the ground. “Young Highnesses! We have no idea where the divine masters’ three weapons have gone.”
小王子聽言，心驚膽戰道：「想是師父今夜收拾去了。」急奔暴紗亭看時，見白馬尚在廊下，忍不住叫道：「師父還睡哩？」沙僧道：「起來了。」即將房門開了，讓王子進裡看時，不見兵器，慌慌張張問道：「師父的兵器都收來了？」行者跳起道：「不曾收啊。」王子道：「三般兵器，今夜都不見了。」八戒連忙爬起道：「我的鈀在麼？」小王道：「適才我等出來，只見眾人前後找尋不見，弟子恐是師父收了，卻才來問。老師的寶貝，俱是能長能消，想必藏在身邊哄弟子哩。」行者道：「委的未收。都尋去來。」
小王子听言，心惊胆战道：「想是师父今夜收拾去了。」急奔暴纱亭看时，见白马尚在廊下，忍不住叫道：「师父还睡哩？」沙僧道：「起来了。」即将房门开了，让王子进里看时，不见兵器，慌慌张张问道：「师父的兵器都收来了？」行者跳起道：「不曾收啊。」王子道：「三般兵器，今夜都不见了。」八戒连忙爬起道：「我的钯在么？」小王道：「适才我等出来，只见众人前后找寻不见，弟子恐是师父收了，却才来问。老师的宝贝，俱是能长能消，想必藏在身边哄弟子哩。」行者道：「委的未收。都寻去来。」
The young princes were frightened out of their wits. “Perhaps our masters put them away during the night.” They hurried to the Silk-Sunning Pavilion, where they saw the white horse still beneath the covered walkway, and could not help calling out, “Masters, are you still asleep?” “We’re up,” said Sha Monk. He opened the door and let the princes in. Seeing no weapons, they asked in great agitation, “Masters, have you put all your weapons away?” Pilgrim sprang up. “No, we haven’t.” “All three weapons disappeared during the night,” said the princes. Bajie scrambled up at once. “Is my rake there?” The young princes said, “When we came out just now, we found everyone searching high and low without finding them. Your disciples thought perhaps our masters had put them away, so we came to ask. Your treasures can all grow and shrink. Surely you’ve hidden them on your persons and are teasing your disciples?” “We certainly haven’t put them away,” said Pilgrim. “Let’s all go and look.”
隨至院中篷下，果然不見蹤影。八戒道：「定是這夥鐵匠偷了。快拿出來，略遲了些兒，就都打死，打死。」那鐵匠慌得磕頭滴淚道：「爺爺，我們連日辛苦，夜間睡著，乃至天明起來，遂不見了。我等乃一概凡人，怎麼拿得動？望爺爺饒命，饒命。」行者無語，暗恨道：「還是我們的不是，既然看了式樣，就該收在身邊，怎麼卻丟放在此？那寶貝霞彩光生，想是驚動甚麼歹人，乘夜竊去也。」八戒不信道：「哥哥說那裡話？這般個太平境界，又不是曠野深山，怎得個歹人來？定是鐵匠欺心，他見我們的兵器光彩，認得是三件寶貝，連夜走出王府，夥些人來，擡的擡，拉的拉，偷出去了。拿過來打呀，打呀。」眾匠只是磕頭發誓。

They went together to the shed in the courtyard, and sure enough, there was not a trace of them. “These blacksmiths must have stolen them!” said Bajie. “Bring them out at once! Delay even a little and I’ll beat every one of you to death—to death!” The blacksmiths were terrified. They knocked their heads on the ground with tears running down their faces. “Grandfathers, we’ve worked hard for days. We fell asleep last night, and when we got up at dawn, they were gone. We’re all ordinary mortals. How could we lift them? Spare our lives, Grandfathers, spare our lives!” Pilgrim said nothing, but silently reproached himself. “The fault is ours. Once they’d seen the designs, we ought to have put the weapons away on our persons. Why did we leave them here? Those treasures shine with coloured light. Some villain must have noticed them and stolen them during the night.” Bajie would not believe it. “Brother, what are you talking about? This is a peaceful place, not some wilderness or deep mountain. Where would a villain come from? The blacksmiths must have turned dishonest. They saw our weapons shining and knew they were three treasures. Then they slipped out of the princely residence during the night and rounded up some men. Some carried, some hauled, and they stole them away. Drag them over here and beat them—beat them!” The craftsmen could only keep knocking their heads on the ground and swearing their innocence.
