A poem says:
Heaven’s fortunes go round in a cycle of fall and rise;let a man’s plans be ever so sure to win, they come to nothing. No sooner has he offered a few proposals for peacethan word comes that he must lead out his troops against the rebels.
When fate is fixed, how can the strength of men turn it?The appointed hour comes of itself, at one with gods and ghosts. From of old, rebels and evildoers have always met their end;even a hand that could turn Heaven back would be helpless.

Now, when Marshal Huang saw Bi Gan go straight out of the Meridian Gate like this without a word, he ordered Huang Ming and Zhou Ji: “Follow His Highness and see where he goes.” The two officers took their orders and went. Meanwhile Bi Gan’s horse flew along, and all he could hear was the whistling of the wind. When he had gone some five or seven li, he heard a woman by the roadside, a basket in her hand, crying heartless greens for sale. At the sound, Bi Gan reined in his horse and asked, “What do you mean, heartless greens?” “Heartless greens are what this humble woman sells,” said the woman. “And if a man has no heart,” said Bi Gan, “what then?” “If a man has no heart,” said the woman, “he dies.” Bi Gan gave a great cry and came crashing down from the saddle, and the hot blood of his breast spattered the dust. There is a poem to prove it:
