A poem says:
A marriage fixed beforehand is truly Heaven’s work; believe it: the red thread is tied about the feet.Enemy states may well be joined in happy union; foes and rivals ought by rights to be linked as kin.

Ziya’s clever plan was truly hard to match; the envoy Luan’s strange scheme was used in vain and went awry.It was all Heaven’s working, beyond men’s reckoning: King Zhou had not the fortune to keep his hold on heaven and earth.

Now, San Yisheng left the city, came to the Shang camp and said to the officer of the flag gate, “Officers of the camp gate, report to your Marshal Deng: Zhou of Qi has sent Senior Counsellor San Yisheng, who has business with him and asks to see him.” The adjutant reported it in the command tent: “Report to the Marshal: Zhou of Qi has sent a Senior Counsellor, who has business with you and asks to see you.” Deng Jiugong said, “He and I are enemies. Why should he send a man to see me? He must have come to talk me round. How can I let him into the camp to unsettle the army’s hearts? Tell him: ‘Our two states are at war just now; it would not be fitting to meet.’” The adjutant went out of the camp and gave San Yisheng the answer. Yisheng said, “‘When two states are at war, they do not bar each other’s envoys.’ What harm is there in meeting? I come on Chancellor Jiang’s orders, with business to settle face to face, not by messages passed along. Trouble you to report again.” The adjutant had no choice but to go back into the camp and tell Jiugong all that San Yisheng had said. Jiugong pondered. Beside him, his chief vanguard officer Tai Luan stepped forward and said, “Marshal, take this chance and let him in. Meet things as they come and see what he has to say; we may even find something in it to use. What harm could it do?” Jiugong said, “There is sense in that too.” He ordered those around him: “Invite him in.” The officer of the flag gate went out of the camp gate and said to San Yisheng, “The Marshal invites you in.” Counsellor San dismounted, walked in through the camp gate, passed the three rows of deer-antler barricades and came to the foot of the eaves. Deng Jiugong came down to meet him. San Yisheng bowed and said, “Marshal!” Jiugong said, “Counsellor, you honour me with your coming, and I failed to go out to meet you.” Each deferred to the other as they exchanged courtesies. Someone of a later age wrote a poem praising Ziya’s clever plan alone. It says:
