King Wu of Zhou gives away the riches of the Deer Terrace

A poem says:

King Zhou gathered riches, sucking the people’s fat,and would not believe in the day when Jie was banished;his heaped-up grain was no plan for a thousand years, his hoarded wealth could never last a hundred.

Know this: the world’s fortunes turn when a true lord appears;laugh at the greedy, lustful fool and his folly.Today it all goes back to the people and their altars —when did Heaven’s will ever allow a private grasp?

Now, when the lords had all gone up into the Nine-Bay Hall, they saw officers and captains of every rank, great and small, thronging in good order on both sides below the vermilion steps. Ziya gave the order: “Soldiers, first put out the fires in the palace.” King Wu said to Ziya, “King Zhou was without the Way and cruel to every living thing, and the six palaces lay close at his elbow, so his palace women and eunuchs suffered worst of all. Now, as the soldiers fight the fire, the innocent may well be swept up in it. Father Chancellor, forbid it strictly before anything else, so that they do not come to harm again.” Hearing this, Ziya quickly gave the order: “Soldiers and all others are to put out the fire and nothing more. No one is to run wild and do violence. Anyone who dares disobey — who takes so much as one thing from the six palaces, or kills one person without cause — will be beheaded before the army, and no mercy shown! Let every one of you know it.” At this the palace women, eunuchs, guards and officers all cried, “Ten thousand years!” King Wu halted in the Nine-Bay Hall and watched the soldiers fight the fire with the lords. Suddenly he looked up and saw twenty great bronze pillars, gleaming yellow, standing in a row by the east side of the hall. King Wu asked, “What are these bronze pillars?” Ziya said, “These bronze pillars are the burning pillar, the punishment King Zhou devised.” King Wu said, “Ah! It is not only cruel to those put to death on them — even I, just looking at them today, feel my heart and gall split. King Zhou, the Son of Heaven, was cruel beyond all measure!” Ziya led King Wu into the rear palace. At the foot of the Star-Plucking Tower they saw the scorpion pit, where snakes and scorpions writhed and tumbled over one another, white bones lay bare and skulls rolled about; they saw the pool of wine, where a dismal wind blew dark and cold, and the forest of meat, where cold dew lay chill and sad. King Wu asked, “What is all this?” Ziya said, “This is the scorpion pit King Zhou made for killing palace women; on either side are the forest of meat and the pool of wine.” King Wu said, “How sad! How could King Zhou, the Son of Heaven, be so utterly without humanity?” Overcome with grief, he made a poem to record it. The poem said:
