Under cover of public duty, Minister Cui settles a private score;Sitting side by side, two old fishermen drop their lines

Stone chambers, hollow and craggy, reach to the purple heavens;from grey cliffs the stone milk drips, wetting monks and woodcutters.

Sitting still on a rush cushion, with nothing else to do,I gaze far off at Tiantai, where a wondrous signpost rises.

We shall not tell how Second Aunt Zhang went on her way. Our story turns to Han Xiangzi, who had taken leave of Master Lü and gone straight to the Dragon King of the Eastern Sea. There a great crowd of Turtle Chancellors, Softshell Privy Councillors, Horned-Dragon Aides and Flood-Dragon Grandees bowed low one after another, while Carp Marshals, Bream Commanders, Black-Carp Grand Commandants and Crab Regional Commanders came hurrying forward in neat ranks and prostrated themselves in welcome. From the sides came a throng of Sturgeon Captains, Alligator Vanguards, shrimp soldiers and whitefish troopers, crowding round the Dragon King’s sons and grandsons, who hurried out of the palace to greet him. They came up to him and said, “May we ask, immortal of the upper realm, what brings you down to the watery realm?” “There’s something you don’t know,” said Xiangzi, and he asked, “Where is the Dragon King, Ao Guang?” “He has gone by imperial command to make rain over Guilin and Xiang Commandery,” the dragon sons and grandsons answered with one voice, “and he isn’t back yet.” “I received the Jade Emperor’s command to go into the city of Chang’an and bring Lady Dou and Luying to the Way,” said Xiangzi, “but who would have thought it? They cling to their glory and splendour and won’t follow me to cultivate themselves. So I reported to the Jade Emperor and had Master Lü send Minister Cui a dream, so that he would memorialize Emperor Xianzong and have the whole Han family driven out to live in Changli again. But I fear they’ll stay as infatuated as ever and won’t change their minds, so the Dragon King is to stir up the wind and raise the waves, roll up the sea and lift the billows, and wash away everything they have in Changli County — halls, houses, fields, hill land and ponds — without leaving a single thing, to shake their hearts loose from the soil of home. When both places are empty for them and there’s no road forward or back, then I’ll set to work and bring them to the Way. As for the rest — the people’s houses, the government buildings, the hill farms and the pond land — not a hair of them is to be harmed, on pain of punishment.” “Once the Jade Emperor’s decree has gone out, who would dare disobey?” said the dragon sons and grandsons. “When our father, Ao Guang, returns, he will see to it and report back.”
