Now, when Zhong Xiong heard Zhi Hua’s words, his eyes were opened all at once. And when he saw how the heroes held friendship weightier than a mountain, he gladly turned toward the good. It was a case of “like voices answer one another, like spirits seek one another.”
世間君子與小人原是冰炭不同爐的。君子可以立小人之隊，小人再不能入君子之群。什麼緣故呢？是氣味不能相投，品行不能同道。即如鍾雄他原是豪傑朋友，皆因一時心高氣傲，所以差了念頭。如今被眾人略略規箴，登時清濁立辨，邪正分明，立刻就離了小人之隊，入了君子之群，何等暢快，何等大方。他既說出洗心改悔，便是心悅誠服；決不是那等反覆小人，今日說了，明日不算，再不然，鬧矯強，鬥經濟，怎麼沒來由怎麼好，那是何等行為。

In this world, gentlemen and petty men are like ice and burning coals, which cannot share one stove. A gentleman may stand in the ranks of petty men, but a petty man can never join the company of gentlemen. Why is that? Because their tastes do not agree and their conduct does not go the same road. Take Zhong Xiong: he was a true hero at heart, and it was only because, in a moment of pride and arrogance, he set his sights too high that his thinking went astray. Now, with a little admonishment from the others, he told the clear from the muddy and the crooked from the straight at once, left the ranks of petty men on the spot and joined the company of gentlemen. How heartening, and how large-minded! Once he had said he would wash his heart clean and mend his ways, he was won over in earnest. He was nothing like those fickle petty men who say a thing today and go back on it tomorrow — or else turn contrary, pit scheme against scheme, and like best whatever has the least reason to it. What sort of conduct is that?

Meanwhile the heroes had all risen to their feet, and among them were two whom Zhong Xiong did not know. When he asked, he learned that one was Ding Zhaohui of the Twin Heroes of Mohua Village, and the other Jiang Zechang, the fourth gallant of Xiankong Island. Zhong Xiong had long known their names too, and they all greeted one another.
