They return straight to the Eastern Land; The five sages attain the truth

Let us leave the four pilgrims as they made their escape and rose on the wind with the Vajra Guardians. Our story turns to the people at the Life-Saving Monastery in Chen Village. At dawn they got up and prepared more fruit and dishes to offer the pilgrims, but when they reached the foot of the tower, the Tang Monk was gone. One came asking, another came searching; all were flustered and at a loss, crying out in dismay, “We’ve simply let a living Buddha get away!” After a while, with nothing else to be done, they carried all the offerings they had prepared upstairs, made sacrifices and burned paper offerings. Thereafter they held four great sacrifices and twenty-four lesser ones every year. People praying for recovery from illness or for safety, seeking marriages and making vows, asking for wealth or children, came every day and at every hour to burn incense and offer thanks. Truly, the golden censer’s fire burned on for a thousand years, and the lamps in their jade cups shone for ten thousand. But enough of that.

Meanwhile the Eight Great Vajra Guardians raised a second fragrant wind and carried the four pilgrims to the Eastern Land before long. Soon Chang’an came into view. Now, Taizong had seen the Tang Monk out of the city three days before the full moon of the ninth month in the thirteenth year of the Zhenguan reign. By the sixteenth year he had ordered the Ministry of Works to build a Scripture-Watching Tower outside the Xi’an Gate to receive the scriptures, and every year he went there in person. That very day he had again gone up into the tower when he suddenly saw the whole western sky filled with auspicious mist and felt wave upon wave of fragrant wind. The Vajra Guardians halted in midair and called, “Holy monk, this is Chang’an. We had better not go down. The people here are sharp-witted, and we fear they may discover our true forms. The Great Sage Sun and the other two need not go either. Go yourself, deliver the scriptures to your sovereign and come straight back. We will wait for you in the heavens and return with you to report that our command is fulfilled.” The Great Sage said, “Your words are quite right, venerable ones, but how is my master to carry the scripture loads? How is he to lead the horse? We must go down with him and see him there. Please wait a little in the air. Surely we won’t keep you long.” The Vajra Guardians said, “The Bodhisattva Guanyin told the Buddha the other day that the journey there and back must take only eight days, to complete the number of the collection. More than four days have already passed. We only fear Bajie may covet wealth and honours and make us miss the appointed time.” Bajie laughed. “Master is becoming a Buddha, and I hope to become one too. Why would I covet such things? You great clumsy louts! All of you wait here. Once we’ve handed over the scriptures, I’ll come back and return with you to dedicate our merit.” The Idiot shouldered the loads, Sha Monk led the horse, and Pilgrim guided the holy monk. They all lowered their cloud and landed beside the Scripture-Watching Tower.

Taizong and his officials saw them at once and came down from the tower to welcome them. “Our brother, you have returned?” The Tang Monk immediately bowed to the ground. Taizong helped him up and asked, “Who are these three?” The Tang Monk replied, “Disciples I took in along the road.” Delighted, Taizong ordered his attendants, “Have Our own carriage horse saddled, and invite Our brother to mount it and return to court with Us.” The Tang Monk thanked him for his favour and mounted. The Great Sage followed close behind, whirling his gold-banded cudgel, while Bajie and Sha Monk tended the horse and carried the loads. Together they followed the imperial procession into Chang’an. Truly:

In those days, with the land at peace, they rejoiced in a tranquil reign;civil and military officers stood secure, their talents shining. At the Water and Land Assembly the monk expounded the Dharma;in the Hall of Golden Chimes the ruler sent his minister forth.By imperial decree Tang Sanzang received his travel pass;the scriptures’ primal causes accorded with the Five Elements.Through bitter trials the fierce demons were destroyed, one kind after another;his task complete, he gladly comes to court in the capital.

The Tang Monk and his three companions followed the Emperor into court. No one in the whole city failed to hear that the scripture-fetchers had returned.
