An evil demon assails the true Dharma; The will’s horse remembers the Mind-Ape

Now, the monster had Sha Monk tied up, but did not kill him or beat him, or so much as curse him once. Grabbing his steel sabre, he thought to himself, “The Tang Monk comes from a superior state and must know propriety and duty. Surely I haven’t spared his life only for him to send his disciples to capture me? Ah! My wife must have sent some letter to his kingdom and let the secret out. I’ll go and question her.” A sudden savage fury seized the monster, and he meant to kill the princess.

Meanwhile, the princess knew nothing of this. Having just finished dressing her hair and putting on her ornaments, she came forward. There stood the monster, glaring, scowling and grinding his teeth. The princess still greeted him with a smile. “My lord, what has upset you so?” With a sharp shout the monster cursed her. “You bitch with a dog’s heart, you have no sense of human ties! When I first brought you here, there wasn’t a word of complaint. You wear brocade and gold, and if you lack anything I go and find it. All four seasons you live in comfort; every day I give you my love. Why do you think only of your parents, without a scrap of feeling for your husband?” At this the princess was so frightened that she fell to her knees. “My lord, why are you talking of parting today?” The monster said, “It’s not me who wants to part — it’s you! I captured that Tang Monk and meant to enjoy him. Why did you let him go without telling me first? So you secretly wrote a letter and had him deliver it for you! Otherwise, why have those two monks come battering at my gate again, demanding that I send you back? Isn’t this your doing?” The princess said, “My lord, you blame me wrongly. When did I ever send a letter?” The old monster said, “Still arguing! I’ve caught one of our enemies right here. Isn’t that proof?” The princess said, “Who is it?” The old demon said, “The Tang Monk’s second disciple, Sha Monk.” Now, when people come to the point of death, who will willingly admit to a death sentence? She could only brazen it out. The princess said, “My lord, calm your anger for now. Let me go with you and question him. If there really was a letter, you can beat me to death and I’ll accept it willingly. But if there was no letter, wouldn’t you be killing your handmaid unjustly?”

At these words the monster would hear no argument. He swung out an indigo-blue hand as big as a winnowing basket, grabbed the ten thousand hairs of that daughter of the royal house, dragged the princess forward and flung her to the ground. Steel sabre in hand, he questioned Sha Monk with a sharp shout. “Sha Monk! You two dared come attacking our gate on your own authority. Was it because this woman sent a letter to her kingdom, and the king sent you here?” Sha Monk, bound where he was, saw how savage the demon was: he had dashed the princess to the ground and held a sabre ready to kill her. He thought to himself, “She plainly did send a letter and saved my Master. That was an immense kindness. If I let it out, he’ll kill the princess. Wouldn’t that be repaying kindness with harm? Very well, very well. Old Sha has followed his Master all this way and done nothing to repay him. Now that I’m tied up, I’ll give this life to repay my Master’s kindness.” So he shouted, “Demon, don’t be insolent! What letter did she send? Why wrong her like this and try to take her life? There’s a reason we came here to demand the princess. When you caught my Master and kept him in your cave, he saw the princess and how she looked and behaved. When he reached the kingdom of Baoxiang to have his travel documents exchanged, the king was having portraits of the princess made and asking for news of her everywhere. He showed my Master her likeness and asked whether he had seen her on the road. My Master then told him about the princess. The king knew she was his daughter, gave us imperial wine and sent us to capture you and bring his princess back to the palace. That is the truth. What letter was there? If you want to kill someone, kill Old Sha! Don’t murder an innocent person unjustly. It would be a great offence against Heaven’s justice.”
