Zhu Bajie rouses the Monkey King to act in brotherly duty;Pilgrim Sun subdues the demon through his wits

Bound in duty, they cherish one another as brothers; the Dharma returns to their true nature. Metal obeys and Wood submits, bringing the true fruit to completion; the Mind-Ape and the Wood Mother unite the elixir’s primal essence. Together they ascend to the Western Land of Ultimate Bliss; together they enter the gate of nonduality.

The scriptures are the main road of cultivation;the Buddha accords with one’s own primal spirit.Elder brother reconciled with younger, the three form one covenant;demons and fiends in their forms answer to the Five Elements.

Cut away the lure of the six gates, and go straight to the Great Thunderclap Monastery.

Now, the Idiot had been caught by a whole swarm of monkeys. They carried him, tugged him and hauled him along, tearing his monk’s robe to pieces. Grumbling and muttering, he said to himself, “That’s it, that’s it. This time I’m going to be beaten to death.” Before long they reached the cave entrance. The Great Sage sat on the rocky ledge and cursed him. “You chaff-stuffed lump of a fool! Go if you want to go. Why curse me?” Bajie knelt on the ground. “Brother, I never cursed you. If I did, may I bite my tongue off at the root! I only said that if Brother wouldn’t come, I’d go back and tell Master myself. How would I dare curse you?” Pilgrim said, “How could you hide it from me? When I pull my left ear upward, I hear what people are saying in the Thirty-three Heavens. When I pull my right ear downward, I hear the Ten Kings of the Underworld and their judges settling accounts. You cursed me on the road just now. How could I not hear?” Bajie said, “Brother, I know what a sneaky, sly little fellow you are. You must have changed into something again and followed me to listen.” Pilgrim called, “Little ones, choose some stout clubs! First give him twenty welcoming blows on the ankles, then twenty to flower his back. After that, wait for me to send him on his way with my iron cudgel.” In a panic Bajie kowtowed. “Brother, for Master’s sake, please, please spare me!” Pilgrim said, “A fine, kind, dutiful Master he’s been to me!” Bajie pleaded again. “Brother, if not for Master’s sake, then for the sake of the Bodhisattva of the Sea, spare me!”

At the mention of the Bodhisattva, Pilgrim relented a little. “Brother, since you put it that way, I won’t beat you for now. But tell me honestly, and hide nothing. Where has that Tang Monk got into trouble, that you’ve come here to trick me?” Bajie said, “Brother, there’s no trouble. He really does miss you.” Pilgrim cursed him. “You wretch who deserves a beating! Still trying to fool me? Old Sun’s body is back in the Water-Curtain Cave, but his heart follows the scripture-seeking monk. That Master meets trouble at every step and disaster everywhere. Tell me quickly and save yourself a beating.” At these words Bajie knocked his head on the ground and confessed. “Brother, I did mean to keep it from you and trick you into coming. I never expected you to be so sharp. Spare me the beating and let me get up to tell you.” Pilgrim said, “Very well. Get up and speak.” The monkeys let go. The Idiot sprang to his feet and looked wildly to either side. “What are you looking at?” Pilgrim asked. Bajie said, “Checking which road is clear, so I can run.” Pilgrim said, “Where could you run? I could give you three days’ head start, and Old Sun would still know how to catch you and bring you back. Speak, and be quick about it. If you make me lose my temper, I certainly won’t spare you.”
