On Flat-Top Mountain, the Merit Officer brings a warning; In Lotus Cave, the Wood Mother meets disaster

Now, the Tang Monk had Pilgrim Sun back again, and Master and disciples, united in heart and purpose, travelled on toward the West. Having rescued the princess of Baoxiang, they had been escorted out beyond the western side of the city by the king and his ministers. There is no telling all their meals when hungry, their drinks when thirsty, their nights at rest and their departures at dawn. Once more the season was spring. At that time:

A light wind stirs the willows, green as silk;a lovely scene, most worthy of a verse. The season urges birds to sing, the warmth brings flowers into bloom, and fragrance fills the earth.A pair of swallows comes to courtyards bright with crabapple flowers:now is the time to savour spring.Along the dusty streets and splendid roads, amid silks and gauzes, pipes and strings, they play at matching grasses and pass the wine cups round.

As Master and disciples travelled on, enjoying the scenery, another mountain rose across their path. The Tang Monk said, “Disciples, take care. There are high mountains ahead, and I fear tigers and wolves may bar our way.” Pilgrim said, “Master, a monk shouldn’t talk like someone still living at home. Do you remember these words from the Heart Sutra that the Chan Master of Crow’s Nest taught you: ‘The mind has no hindrance; with no hindrance, there is no fear, and one leaves far behind delusion and dreams’? All you need is this: ‘Sweep the grime from your heart; wash the dust from your ears. Without suffering the bitterest hardships, you can hardly rise above other men.’ Don’t worry. With Old Sun here, even if the sky came crashing down, I could keep you safe. Why fear tigers and wolves?” The elder reined his horse back and said, “I

left Chang’an that year by imperial command, intent on coming west to bow before the Buddha. In lands of sacred relics, golden images gleam;in Buddhist pagodas, the jade-white curl shines bright.I have sought out every nameless stream beneath the sky, crossed every mountain men have never reached. On and on through wave on wave of mist:when will this body ever find its rest?”

Pilgrim listened and laughed. “Master, what’s so hard about finding rest? Once your task is done, all worldly ties will cease, and all phenomena will be empty. Then it will come of itself. Won’t that be rest for your body?” Hearing this, the elder could only let his pleasure drive his cares away. He loosened the reins and urged his silver steed onward, gathered the bridle and sped his jade dragon along.

Master and disciples climbed the mountain. It was fearfully steep, its crags towering indeed. What a mountain!

Lofty ridges,sharp-cut peaks.Below, deep ravines wind and turn;beside them, lonely cliffs rise sheer.Down in the winding ravines, all they hear is the rushing splash of pythons rolling in the water;beside the lonely, sheer cliffs, all they see is tigers flicking their tails as they emerge from the rugged forest.Look up:the jutting summits pierce the blue sky.Turn your eyes below:the depths of the valleys border on the azure beyond.Climbing high, they find ladders and steps;descending low, they find trenches and pits.Strange indeed are these peaks and ridges;sharp indeed these serried, knife-cut cliffs. On the summit ridges, herb gatherers think twice before they venture;before the sheer cliffs, woodcutters can hardly take a step.Wild sheep and horses dart about like shuttles;crafty hares and mountain cattle stand as if in battle ranks. The mountain hides the sun and screens the stars, and monstrous beasts and grey wolves often cross the way.Grass tracks vanish in tangles where horses cannot pass:how can they reach the Thunderclap Monastery and see the Buddha King?
