奉詔西征剖玉符，旛幢飄颺映長途。驚看畫戟翻錢豹，更羨冰花佛劍鳧。

A poem says:
By royal decree he marches west, the jade tally split;banners and pennons flutter, gleaming down the long road.In alarm men watch the painted halberds toss leopard tails spotted like coins,and marvel still more at swords of frost-flower steel, like ducks on the wing.

話說晁雷離了西岐，星夜進五關，過澠池，渡黃河，往朝歌，非止一日，進了都城，先至聞太師府來。太師正在銀安殿閒坐，忽報：「晁雷等令。」太師急令至簷前，忙問西岐光景。晁雷答曰：「末將兵至西岐，彼時有南宮适搦戰。末將出馬，大戰三十合，未分勝敗，兩家鳴金。次日，晁田大戰辛甲，辛甲敗回。連戰數日，勝敗未分。奈因汜水關韓榮不肯應付糧草，三軍慌亂。大抵糧草乃三軍之性命，末將不得已，故此星夜來見太師。望乞速發糧草，再加添兵卒，以作應援。」聞太師沉吟半晌，曰：「前有火牌令箭，韓榮為何不發糧草應付？晁雷，你點三千人馬，糧一千，星夜往西岐接濟。等老夫再點大將，共破西岐，不得遲誤。」晁雷領令，速點三千人馬，糧草一千，暗暗來帶家小，出了朝歌，星夜往西岐去了。有詩為證：

Now, Chao Lei left Xiqi and travelled by night and day; he came in through the Five Passes, passed Mianchi, crossed the Yellow River and made for Zhaoge. After many days he entered the capital and went first to the residence of Grand Preceptor Wen. The Grand Preceptor was sitting at his ease in the Yin’an Hall when a report came: “Chao Lei awaits your orders.” The Grand Preceptor at once had him brought to the foot of the eaves and asked eagerly how things stood at Xiqi. Chao Lei answered, “This humble officer led the troops to Xiqi, and Nangong Kuo came out to challenge us. This humble officer rode out and we fought thirty bouts with neither side winning, and both sides sounded the gongs to call back their troops. The next day Chao Tian fought Xin Jia, and Xin Jia was beaten back. We fought for several days, and still neither side won. But Han Rong at Sishui Pass would not supply us with grain and fodder, and the army fell into disorder. Grain and fodder are the very life of an army. This humble officer had no choice, and so I have come through the night to see you, Grand Preceptor. I beg you to send grain and fodder quickly, and more troops besides, to reinforce us.” Grand Preceptor Wen pondered a long while, then said, “Fire tablets and arrows of command were sent out before. Why has Han Rong not sent you grain? Chao Lei, pick three thousand men and horses and a thousand loads of grain, and go through the night to Xiqi with relief for our army. When this old man has chosen more great generals, we will break Xiqi together. There must be no delay.” Chao Lei took the order, quickly picked three thousand men and horses and a thousand loads of grain and fodder, secretly took his family along with him, left Zhaoge and went off through the night towards Xiqi.
