In the Heaven-Severing Formation the fury is fierce;meet the Earth-Blaze as well, and it is harder still to bear.Qin Wan only made up the number — all of it fixed by Heaven;Yuan Jiao is put to death because his nature is greedy.Burnt out by thunder and fire, two are already gone;the Immortal-Binding Rope carries one off — it does not make three.What good are ten paltry formations?All they win is a mention on the Investiture List.

Now, as everyone was discussing who should lead the breaking of the formations, each deferring to the others, a Daoist appeared in the sky, riding a deer and borne on a cloud, with a fragrant breeze wafting all about him. How rare were his looks, how strange his form? Truly he was the head of all the immortals, the fountainhead of the Buddhas. There is a poem to prove it:
一天瑞彩光搖曳，五色祥雲飛不徹。鹿鳴空內九皋聲，紫芝色秀千層葉。中門現出真人相，古怪容顏原自別。神舞虹霓透漢霄，腰懸寶錄無生滅。靈鷲山下號燃燈，時赴蟠桃添壽域。

Auspicious colours fill the sky, their light flickering;clouds of five colours fly without end.A deer cries in the air with the voice of the nine marshes;purple fungus flourishes in a thousand layers of leaves.From the central gate appears the form of a true immortal,his strange features plainly unlike any other.His spirit dances on rainbows that pierce the Milky Way;at his waist hangs a precious register beyond birth and death.Below Mount Lingjiu he goes by the name of Randeng;at times he goes to the peaches of immortality to add to the realm of long life.
