By the Buddha’s power, a clever capture of the Tousle-Headed Ghost;By sorcery’s power, a sword refined to harm a woman

Now, when Shang Qingyun had gone, Hua Qingfeng and Meng Qingyuan put their clothes on, at once rode the foot-wind, and made straight for Mount Meihua. When they reached the cave, they saw two boys guarding its gate. “Boy,” said Hua Qingfeng, “is the Patriarch in the cave?” “He’s in the cave now,” said the boy. The two of them went straight in. Inside they saw a cloud couch, and on it sat the Perfected One Meihua, Ling Yuanhua, in meditation. He wore a goose-yellow Daoist cap; his face was a deep red, and he had a full white beard. Hua Qingfeng and Meng Qingyuan fell to their knees and paid their respects. “Patriarch above, your disciples Hua Qingfeng and Meng Qingyuan kowtow to you, Patriarch.” The Perfected One Meihua rolled up his eyes and chanted, “Limitless Buddha. What have you two come here for?” “We two have come to beg you, Patriarch, to show great mercy and take revenge for the Sanqing Sect,” said Hua Qingfeng. “There’s a monk loose in the world called Crazy Ji who is raising up the Three Jewels and wiping out the Three Pure Ones. He’s made enemies of us two. For no reason at all he burned my disciple Zhang Miaoxing to death, and he hounded my disciple Jiang Tianrui to his death, and he burned the pair of us into the state you see. He says there’s not a human being in our Sanqing Sect: we’re all things that wear fur and horns, with our backs to the sky and a cross-bone through the heart, not made the way men are made, and he means to wipe out the Sanqing Sect. It’s utterly hateful. We beg you, Patriarch, show great mercy: first, take revenge for us two, and second, get rid of Crazy Ji and win back a little face for the Sanqing Sect.” When he heard this, Ling Yuanhua said, “You two wretches, you must have come here to make mischief. Why would Crazy Ji set himself against you for no reason? You two must have provoked him.” “Patriarch,” said Hua Qingfeng, “you don’t believe us, venerable sir, but it really is Crazy Ji who insults the people of the Sanqing Sect for no reason.” “In that case,” said Ling Yuanhua, “you two go down the mountain. When you see Crazy Ji, tell him there’s no need for him to set himself against us. Tell him to come and see me, and I’ll put an end to his life. I can’t go down the mountain to look for him.” “Yes,” said Hua Qingfeng. “Brother, let’s go and find Crazy Ji.” Talking as they went, the two of them came out. They had only just come out of the cave gate when they saw Ji Gong come shuffling along, stumbling in a hurry, heading straight for Meihua Cave. “I’ve come looking for your Daoist,” said the monk. “Tell him to come out and let me have a look at him.” The moment he saw him, Hua Qingfeng shouted, “Patriarch, come out quick! Crazy Ji is here!” Ling Yuanhua came out of the cave at once. He raised his head and looked: above the monk’s head there was no golden light or white aura; he was in rags and tatters, nothing but a beggar. “Crazy Ji,” said the Daoist, “let me ask you: why did you burn Zhang Miaoxing to death and hound Jiang Tianrui to death, and make enemies of these two, Hua Qingfeng and his brother?” “You needn’t bother,” said the monk. “It’s all because they did violence and evil. They deserved the slicing knife long ago, and then some. And what sort of Daoist are you, that you want to do something to your elder here?” “Let’s see how much skill you have,” said Ling Yuanhua. At once the Daoist puffed out his belly, opened his mouth and spat out a beam of yellow light. “Aiya!” cried the monk. He toppled over and fell, and his breath stopped on the spot. Ling Yuanhua looked and sighed. “Hua Qingfeng, you two have made mischief for no reason. He’s only an ordinary mortal, and you’ve made me commit this sin. And that’s not the worst of it: when Li Hanling, the Perfected One Zixia of Mount Wansong, and Elder Lingkong, the Long-Browed Arhat of Mount Jiusong, come to inspect the mountain, they will never let me off.” The Daoist was full of regret.

It turned out that this Daoist was not a man but an ape. He had cultivated himself in the mountains for many years, dissolved his cross-bone, and could speak human speech. Li Hanling and Elder Lingkong came to inspect the mountain once every ten years, and he always had fresh peaches and fine wine ready for Li Hanling and Elder Lingkong to drink. He did it out of pure reverence. Later he wanted to take Li Hanling as his master. “That won’t do,” said Li Hanling. “We Daoists who cultivate the Way are all men. How can I take an ape as my disciple?” He begged and begged, until Li Hanling, at a loss, said, “I’ll give you a surname: let it be Ling.” “I’ll give you a given name,” said Elder Lingkong. “Yuanhua.” That was why he was called Ling Yuanhua. Ordinarily he never went down the mountain. He gathered herbs in the mountains and made them into elixirs, and went out to save people far and wide. He truly kept to proper cultivation and meant to attain the true fruit, and he had learned some skills from Li Hanling as well. Today he had spat Ji Gong to the ground, and now he was sorry for it himself, afraid that Li Hanling would not let him off in days to come. When Hua Qingfeng saw the monk lying there, he was delighted. “Patriarch, give me your sword,” he said. “I’ll kill him.” “I’ll kill him,” said Meng Qingyuan. “I can’t let you kill him,” said Ling Yuanhua. “Then I really would have sinned. I’ve laid him out, and unless I give him an elixir to eat, he can’t get up. If I don’t give him medicine for one day, he lies here one day; if I don’t give it for two days, he lies here two days; and if I never give him medicine, he’ll lie here till he dies.” Before the words were out of his mouth, the monk rolled over and scrambled to his feet. Ling Yuanhua was badly startled. “Monk, I didn’t give you any medicine. How did you get up?” “I’ll lie down again and wait for you to give me medicine,” said the monk. “I did mean to save your face and wait until you gave me medicine before I got up, but the ground’s too cold. And you don’t know who this monk is. I’ll show you.” As he spoke, the monk rubbed the crown of his head and chanted, “Om! By command — he!” Ling Yuanhua looked again: the monk stood sixteen feet tall, his head like a grain basket and his face like a crab’s shell. He wore a long monk’s robe, his two legs bare and his two feet bare in straw sandals: the Arhat Zhijue in the flesh. It frightened Yuanhua so badly that he ran into the cave, shut the cave door and dared not come out. The monk didn’t go after him. Hua Qingfeng and Meng Qingyuan were so scared they turned tail and ran. The monk didn’t chase them either, but headed straight east for Mount Ehu.
