A word of explanation: after Hua Qingfeng fled from Mount Meihua, he thought it over and decided that he would have to kill Ji Gong, whatever it took. He meant to forge a Mother-and-Child Soul Sword, which could cut through an arhat’s golden light. To forge the Mother-and-Child Soul Sword, he had to cut open a woman carrying a boy, take the blood of mother and child and smear it on the blade; then he had only to quicken it with a charm and a spell, and the sword would be made. When Hua Qingfeng had thought it through, he worked a little sorcery and came by some silver. He bought a medicine chest and a stock of pills, powders, plasters and elixirs, meaning to go round the villages of the countryside under the pretence of curing the sick, the better to find a woman carrying a boy. Hua Qingfeng took up his medicine chest and came walking into a village. There he saw two old women chatting. “Eaten yet, Auntie Liu?” said one. “I have,” said the other. “Have you eaten, Aunt Chen?” “I have,” said the first. Of the two old women, one was named Liu and the other Chen. “Look there, Aunt,” said Old Mrs. Liu. “That woman who just went by, isn’t that Wang Er’s wife?” “So it is,” said Old Mrs. Chen. “Weren’t Wang Er and his wife always at odds?” said Old Mrs. Liu. “How come his wife’s taking him his dinner now?” “You don’t know, Auntie Liu,” said Old Mrs. Chen. “Wang Er’s wife is with child, she’ll have the baby any day, and Wang Er’s pleased as can be. He works thirty-odd acres of rice paddy himself, and his wife takes him his dinner. They get on fine now.” When Hua Qingfeng heard that the woman was with child, he hurried on ahead. He caught up with her at the end of the village and looked her over, and sure enough, it was a boy she was carrying.

A word of explanation: how could anyone tell whether it was a boy or a girl? As the saying goes, nothing in the world is hard for the one who sets his mind to it. If a woman with child has a bright glow between her brows and steps off with her left foot first, it is sure to be a boy. If the spot between her brows is dark and she steps off with her right foot first, it is sure to be a girl. When Hua Qingfeng had made sure of it, he hurried over, made a Daoist bow and intoned, “Limitless Buddha! Good lady, I see a darkness in the colour of your face. It means discord in your household between husband and wife.” Womenfolk believe in that sort of thing more than anything. She stopped at once. “Can you read faces, Daoist Master?” she said. “You’ve read me right. Aren’t my husband and I at odds? Look and see, Daoist Master, is there any way to break it? If you can break it for me, I’ll be sure to thank you.” “Tell me the eight characters of your birth,” said Hua Qingfeng, “and I’ll break it for you.” “I was born in such-and-such a year, such-and-such a month, on such-and-such a day, at such-and-such an hour,” said the woman. Hua Qingfeng took it all in, then struck her with the flat of his hand on the crown of her head, and the woman went dazed. The Daoist took her under the arm and led her off. Someone in the village saw it. “This is terrible!” he said. “That Daoist is up to no good. He’s carrying off Wang Er’s wife. Let’s get people together quick, catch the Daoist and bury him alive!” By the time the people were gathered, the Daoist had ridden off on his foot-wind and was long gone.
