The true monk and the false meet at the Temple of the Horse King;A Daoist friend is called in with a treasure to settle an old score

Now, the prefect gave word to show him in, and Zhang Wenyuan brought the real Ji Gong inside. The false Crazy Ji looked and saw that it was the same poor monk who had grabbed his horse’s bit ring a little earlier. “Dharma brother,” the false Ji Gong asked, “how should I address you?” “I am none other than Crazy Ji of Lingyin Temple,” said the real Crazy Ji. “And who are you?” “I’m Crazy Ji too,” said the false Crazy Ji. “You’re Crazy Ji too?” said the real Crazy Ji. “Then how come I never saw you at the temple?” “Never mind whether you’ve seen me or not,” said the false Crazy Ji. “In a while we go up on the altar and work our magic, and whoever has the power is the real one.” “Fine by me,” said Ji Gong. “But first things first, let’s eat. A man goes a thousand miles to be an official, and it’s still all for food and clothes. Come on, bring the wine, bring the wine!” At once the prefect had the wine set out. The monk grabbed the food by the handful, and as he grabbed he even offered it round: “Prefect, you have this handful.”

The prefect looked: the hand the monk held out was like five sticks of charcoal. “Please, go ahead,” he said hastily. The monk ate and drank his fill. When they had finished, the prefect went with the real Crazy Ji and the false Crazy Ji to the altar platform, and there they found the crowd of onlookers bigger than ever. “Up onto the altar, dharma brother,” said the false Crazy Ji. “How do I get up?” said the real Crazy Ji. “Work your magic and go up,” said the false Crazy Ji. “I don’t know how,” said the real Crazy Ji. “I’ll go up by the ladder.” The false Crazy Ji stamped his foot and was up on the altar; the real Crazy Ji made a show of climbing the ladder. “You burn the incense first,” said the false Crazy Ji. Ji Gong took the incense and lit it. “Aren’t you going to pray?” said the false Crazy Ji. “Pray for what?” said the real Ji Gong. “Whatever’s on your mind, pray for that,” said the false Crazy Ji. “I’m poor,” said Ji Gong. “Nobody cares if you’re poor,” said the false Crazy Ji. “Then I’m hungry,” said Ji Gong. “Come on,” said the false Crazy Ji, “chant your spells and work your magic and catch the demon. Stop playing the fool.”

“I don’t know how,” said Ji Gong. He turned the incense burning end down and stuck it into the censer. Then the real Ji Gong rolled over and jumped down off the altar, and ran straight into Hu Xiuzhang and Sun Daoquan. “Master, why aren’t you catching the demon?” they said. “So you two got here early,” said the monk. “We’re staying out of it. In a while someone with more power than us lot will come and catch the demon. Let’s just watch the fun.” Then Ji Gong said, “That spell I taught you before, have you forgotten it?” “What spell?” said Sun Daoquan. “Om mani padme hum! Om, by command — he!” said the monk. “Oh, that one I remember,” said Sun Daoquan. “You remember it? Good,” said the monk. “Take your sword, stand on the edge of the lake, face the water and recite this spell of mine, and the lake won’t come up. Otherwise, once the lake comes up, it’ll drown every last one of the common folk.” Sun Daoquan nodded and agreed, and went to the lakeshore to recite the spell. Meanwhile, up on the altar, the false Crazy Ji had watched the real Ji Gong go down, and even the crowd of onlookers found it a laughing matter. On the altar the false Crazy Ji drew three charms, lit them and flung them into the lake. There came a roar from the water like the bellowing of an ox. The lake parted to either side, the waves rose sky-high, and out of the middle came a stream of yin-yang vapour, heading straight for the altar.
