Inspecting the bridgehead, they seize the thieving monks;Calling on the magistrate, he sets about rebuilding Wanyuan Bridge

Now, when Ji Gong came back to the temple, Guangliang was delighted. First he ordered a table of food and wine for Ji Gong, and only then did he call Zhiqing and Zhijing in to kowtow to him. “Brother,” said Ji Gong, “you know, I had a dream yesterday.” “What dream?” said Guangliang. “I dreamt of a thieving monk with two greenhorn thieves along with him, each with five bricks on his back, beating a brass gong and calling out the whole time: ‘Hear me, good people one and all: gong in hand, I’ve come to beg. Ask me, patrons, what it’s for? We stole the bricks of Wanyuan Bridge.’ Four runners were marching them along, and if they stopped calling out they got a beating. Now tell me, isn’t that a fresh sort of dream?” Guangliang thought, “That’s odd. How could he know?” Then he said, “Brother, this dream of yours is the real thing. These two young monks are my nephews in the faith. Their master is called Guanghui; he’s abbot of Haichao Temple by Wanyuan Bridge. Because they carried off a few bricks from Wanyuan Bridge, Shihang County has put the three of them in chains, master and disciples, and is making them carry bricks on their backs and raise ten thousand taels of silver in alms to rebuild Wanyuan Bridge. Who do you think is going to give that much? They really can’t bear the punishment any longer, and they know what you can do, so they’ve come to beg you to take pity on them. Brother, do it for my sake. Earn yourself some merit.” “Uncle,” said Zhiqing and Zhijing, “if you won’t agree, the two of us will stay on our knees and never get up.” “Get up, the pair of you,” said Ji Gong. “I knew this meal wouldn’t come free. This table of food is costing me ten thousand taels of silver.” “Do take pity on them,” said Guangliang. “All right,” said Ji Gong. “In a while we’ll go together.” Only then did Zhiqing and Zhijing get up. “Uncle, when will you set off?” they said. “Today,” said Ji Gong. “We go today, I raise the alms right after, and tomorrow work starts on rebuilding Wanyuan Bridge.” Zhiqing and Zhijing thought to themselves, “He’s just talking big for fun.” Aloud they said, “That would be very good.” When Ji Gong had finished eating and drinking, he said, “Let’s go.” “Brother,” said Guangliang, “when you come back, I’ll come and thank you.” “No need for thanks,” said the monk. “It’s a small matter.”

So saying, he left Lingyin Temple with Zhiqing and Zhijing and went along the high road. As he walked, the monk sang a mountain song, making it up as he went:

“Hear me, people of the world: lay up blessings while you may; if the thatch keeps out the rain, the heart is satisfied.Cotton clothes without a hole beat a gown of silk;a thatched roof that doesn’t leak is good as a roof of tile.Seek no glory, take no shame; all my life I keep my place and go the way the world goes.Far away from human rights and wrongs, wherever there’s a show, I join the play and dance along.Nothing grand and nothing mean, one upright heart without a selfish corner in it.Every day I sleep till the sun is three poles high, then rise to a bowl of plain pickled greens.A bowl of gruel, a pinch of greens, I sing and dance for my own sake with nothing to hold me.When guests call I serve them clear tea;when they go I rein in the monkey and the horse of my mind. Now I talk of poems, now I try the flute, and laugh at the rest, so busy all their days, rushing north and south for profit and a name:toiling for whom, and shamed for whom? The seven passions run deep, and the love of children too, yet they are blossoms in the rain and candles in the wind. How many black heads see the white-haired off;how many old folk weep for the young!A vault full of gold, a hall full of jade: who was ever spared the road of Impermanence for that?At the end it all comes to nothing, and off you go alone, with no servant at your side.Heap the grave mound high, make the coffin thick, this body still goes down to the Yellow Springs. No one in this world comes back to life,so why toil and slave so hard?Zhang’s fields, Li’s house; the Qians’ today, the Lus’ tomorrow.Mulberry fields turn to sea, and sea to fields; it has always gone round and round like this. If your time hasn’t come, don’t knit your brows: the eight characters of your birth bring poor or good luck, early or late.Gan Luo was twelve when Qin rewarded him;the Grand Duke was eighty when he first ate Zhou’s grain.Laugh at the Epang Palace, talk of now and of long ago: the rise and fall of old was a game of chess.I urge you, people of the world, turn back now:today I break open the road of delusion for you.”

The monk chanted as he went along, with Zhiqing and Zhijing following behind. “Can you two walk a bit faster?” said the monk. “We can,” said Zhiqing. “Are those legs yours or not?” said the monk. “Uncle,” said Zhiqing and Zhijing, “what a strange thing to say! The legs grow on our own bodies; how could they not be ours?” “I’ll drive you along,” said the monk. “Drive us how?” said Zhiqing. “I recite a spell, and you’ll walk fast,” said the monk. “Recite it, then,” they said. The monk recited the six-syllable mantra: “Om mani padme hum! Om! By command — he!” The two of them could no longer help themselves. It was as if someone were pushing them from behind; they went along as though flying and couldn’t stop. Zhiqing shouted, “Uncle, take your spell off, quick! There’s a tree ahead! If we hit it, our brains will be dashed out!” Behind them the monk shouted, “Never mind! Om! Command! By command — he! Turn, and you’ll go round it.” Sure enough, when Zhiqing and Zhijing reached the wood, one turn took them round it. On they ran. “This is terrible!” said Zhiqing. “There’s a river ahead! If we fall in, we’ll drown!” “Never mind,” said the monk. “Put a bit more into it and you’ll leap right over.” As they spoke, they came to a river three or four zhang wide, and it was just as if someone were holding up their feet: they flew across.
