I’ll go on this errand.” Shao Huafeng looked, and the man who had spoken was the Daoist Master Dutian, Huang Tianhua. “Brother Huang,” said Shao Huafeng, “have you such courage?” “It’s a small matter,” said Huang Tianhua. “The trouble is that I’m only one man, and a single strand makes no thread, a lone tree makes no wood. One man alone is stuck; two together can work things out. Which of you will come with me?” Not one of the crowd answered. “So you are all shy of blades and swords, afraid to die and greedy to live?” said Huang Tianhua. “Since none of you dares to go, I’ll just have to go by myself.” “Brother Huang, if you are going,” said Shao Huafeng, “let this mountain man toast you with three cups of wine to stiffen a hero’s courage!” “Patriarch, there’s no need to set out wine,” said Huang Tianhua. “Wait till I come back with the heads of the prefect and Crazy Ji, and then I’ll drink. That will show what my name is worth.” “Good,” said Shao Huafeng. “Go, then, brother! Our eyes will watch for your victorious banners, our ears will listen for good news. May you win the moment your flags unfurl and succeed the moment your horse arrives.” Huang Tianhua at once took his leave, went down the mountain and made straight for Changzhou Prefecture.

They have come asking to see you.”

Holy monk, is there anything else you need us for?” “There’s one more thing I must trouble you with,” said the monk. “Holy monk, whatever you have to say, just give the order,” said Sun Deliang. “So long as it’s in our power, we won’t shirk it though we die ten thousand deaths.” “I have a brocade pouch here,” said the monk, and he whispered in their ears, thus and so. “Do as my note says. You four go to Lingyin Temple on West Lake.” The four men nodded and agreed. The monk had the prefect give them fifty taels for travelling money, and the four of them took their leave and went.
