話說雷鳴、陳亮由慈雲觀來到五里碑這座黑店。連夜走路，覺著身體勞乏，也覺著腹中飢餓，見眼前有一座店。原本這座店常住保鏢的，雷鳴、陳亮一進店，小夥計王三認識，知道雷鳴、陳亮是威鎮八方楊明的同伴。夥計說：「雷爺、陳爺二位少見哪！」雷鳴、陳亮說：「少見。」王三說：「二位打間上房好不好？」雷鳴說：「好。」夥計帶領來到北上房，是一明兩暗三間，東西都是單間屋子。二人來到北上房西裡間一看，屋裡有八仙桌椅子，靠後窗戶是一張床，張著床幃，床上有小桌。夥計給打洗臉水，倒了茶來，說：「二位吃什麼？」雷鳴、陳亮說：「你給來兩壺酒，先給煎炒烹炸，配六個菜來。」夥計說：「是。」

The waiter led them to the main room on the north side: three bays, an open hall in the middle with an inner room on either side, and on the east and west sides single rooms. The two of them went into the west inner room of the main room and looked around. There was an Eight Immortals table with chairs, and against the back window a bed with its curtains hung and a little table on it. The waiter brought them water to wash their faces and poured tea. “What will you two have to eat?” he said. “Bring us two pots of wine,” said Lei Ming and Chen Liang, “and six dishes to go with them, fried, sautéed, braised and deep-fried.” “Yes, sir,” said the waiter.
轉身出去，少時擦抹案桌，把小菜杯碟擺好，把酒菜端來。雷鳴說：「王夥計你喝一盅。」王三說：「請罷，你們二位這是從哪來？」雷鳴說：「我們由平水江。」王三說：「你們二位由平水江來，沒聽見慈雲觀怎么樣了？」雷鳴說：「你們也知道慈雲觀的事么？」夥計說：「我們也聽見說慈雲觀有幾個老道，妖言惑眾，聽說常州府調官兵去拿賊，可沒得準信。」雷鳴說：「現在有靈隱寺濟公長老，帶領官兵把慈雲觀抄了。」夥計說：「這就是了。」說完了話，轉身出去。雷鳴二人喝著酒，雷鳴說：「老三，你我這回閒事總算管的不錯，要不是濟公他老人家，這些妖道可真辦不了。」陳亮說：「你我要不是濟公，咱們也不管閒事。多一事不如少一事，是非皆因多開口，煩惱皆因強出頭，這件事總算全始全終。」二人正說著話，只聽外面一聲喊嚷：「無量佛！店家有地方沒有？」夥計說：「有。」

When he had said this, he turned and went out. The two of them drank. “Third Brother,” said Lei Ming, “this time we can say we did all right, minding other people’s business. If it weren’t for the good old master Ji Gong, there’d really have been no dealing with these wicked Daoists.” “If it weren’t for Ji Gong,” said Chen Liang, “you and I wouldn’t have minded other people’s business at all. One thing more is worse than one thing less: all quarrels come from opening your mouth, all troubles from pushing yourself forward. Still, we can say we saw this business through from beginning to end.” As they were talking, they heard a shout outside: “Limitless Buddha! Innkeeper, have you any room?” “Yes,” said the waiter.
