于子游

于子游

Yu Ziyou

A man from the coast told this story: “One day a tall mountain suddenly rose out of the sea, and the people who lived there were terrified. A licentiate was lodging for the night on a fishing boat. He had bought some wine and was drinking alone. Late in the night a young man appeared, in a scholar’s gown and cap, and introduced himself as Yu Ziyou. His talk was refined and elegant. The licentiate was delighted and drank merrily with him. They drank until midnight, when the young man rose from the mat to take his leave. ‘Where is your home?’ said the licentiate. ‘The night is black and boundless. You are being too hard on yourself.’ ‘I am not from these parts,’ he answered. ‘It is close to the Qingming festival, and I am to go with the Great King to visit the graves. My household has gone on ahead. The Great King has stopped here a while to rest, and sets out tomorrow at the hour of chen. I ought to go back and get my things ready early.’ The licentiate had no idea who the Great King might be. He saw his guest to the bow of the boat. The young man leapt into the water and was gone with a splash, and the licentiate knew then that he was a fish demon. The next day he saw the mountain peak drifting and moving; in a moment it had sunk out of sight. Only then did he understand that the mountain was a great fish: the Great King the young man had spoken of.” It is commonly said that before Qingming the great fish of the sea take their sons and daughters to pay their respects at the graves. Can it really be so?
