Du Yong tutors a pupil, and a concubine tries to seduce him;Qin Chang makes amends, and a maid loses her life

Now, the monk Jingxiu opened the couplets and looked them over. The brushwork was strong and vigorous, the characters full of grace, and he could not help exclaiming again and again, “Fine calligraphy, fine calligraphy!” Then he looked into the scholar’s face. Poor and hard-pressed as the man was, there was a good deal of refinement about him, and his bearing was out of the common, so that the monk’s compassion was stirred. He told the scholar to put his writing down and ordered a young monk to take him to the back, where he could wash his face and comb his hair, and to give him a meatless meal. The scholar heard this, made a deep bow, and followed the monk out.

“From what I see of this man,” said the Northern Hero, “he has a good deal of uprightness in him. He’s certainly no impostor got up as a scholar.” “Just so,” said Jingxiu. “Just now this old monk saw that his bones are of a rare and pure cast. Still less is he a man to stay long beneath others.” With that they went back to their game.

They had only just finished the game when a man of something over forty came in. The monk knew him: it was Qin Chang, the squire of Qin Family Village. He hastily offered him a seat. “What brings you here, patron? What has put you in such good spirits?” “I wouldn’t presume to trouble your noble temple without a reason,” said Squire Qin. “It’s only that these last few days my mind has been rather uneasy, and I’ve come especially to beg you, Reverend, to read a character for me.”
