Beautifully hit!” He was enjoying himself hugely when he heard the ugly girl ask, “Who are you?” Only then did Ai Hu stop laughing. “I’m Ai Hu,” he said. “They caught me with a dirty trick.” “There’s a Black Fox, and a Northern Hero,” said the ugly girl. “Do you know them?” “Zhi Hua is my teacher,” said Ai Hu, “and Ouyang Chun is my adoptive father.” “In that case,” said the ugly girl, “it’s Brother Ai Hu who’s come!” She hurried over and untied his ropes. Ai Hu got down from the horse and bowed deeply with his hands clasped. “May I ask your name, sister?” “My name is Qiukui,” said the ugly girl. “Sha Long is my adoptive father.” “And the one who was shooting at the bandits with the pellet bow just now,” said Ai Hu, “who was that?” “That’s my sister Fengxian,” said Qiukui, “my adoptive father’s own daughter.” As she spoke she beckoned: “Sister, come over here!” Fengxian, under the tree, had seen Qiukui untying Ai Hu and was far from pleased. “What a thoughtless girl my sister is!” she grumbled to herself. “A girl ought not to go near a man. Whatever does she think she’s doing!” Only when she saw Qiukui beckoning did she come slowly over. “What is it?” “Brother Ai Hu is here,” said Qiukui. When Fengxian heard the name Ai Hu, she could not help taking a good look at him, and her heart filled with gladness. She hurried forward and dipped him a curtsy, and Ai Hu returned it with a bow.

Big Brother, quick, down the hill!” And even as he spoke he came pounding down the slope, thud, thud, thud, thud, bellowing, “Which one’s my nephew Ai Hu? I’ve been dying to see you!”
