且說艾虎同了孟杰張立，回到莊中。史雲正在那裡與眾商議，忽見艾虎等回來了，便問事體如何，張立一一說了。艾虎又將大家上臥虎溝避兵的話，說了一遍。眾漁戶聽了，誰不願躲了是非，一個個忙忙碌碌，俱備收拾衣服細軟，所有粗重傢伙都拋棄了。攜男抱女，攙老扶少，全都在張立家會齊。此時張立已然收拾妥當。艾虎背上包裹，提了齊眉棍，在前開路。孟杰與史雲做了合後，保護眾漁戶家口，竟奔臥虎溝而來。可憐熱熱鬧鬧的漁家樂，如今弄成冷冷清清的綠鴨灘！可是話又說回來，若不如此，後來如何有漁家兵呢？

Now, Ai Hu went back to the village with Meng Jie and Zhang Li. Shi Yun was there talking things over with everyone, and when he saw Ai Hu and the others come back, he asked how matters stood. Zhang Li told him everything point by point. Then Ai Hu went over the plan for them all to take refuge from the bandits at Wohugou. When the fishermen heard it, which of them would not gladly keep out of trouble? Every one of them bustled about packing up clothes and valuables, and all the bulky, heavy things they simply abandoned. Carrying their sons and daughters in their arms, helping the old along and leading the young, they all gathered at Zhang Li’s house. By now Zhang Li had finished packing. Ai Hu shouldered his bundle, took up his eyebrow-high staff and went ahead to open the way. Meng Jie and Shi Yun brought up the rear, guarding the fishermen’s families, and they made straight for Wohugou. Alas, the lively, bustling Fisherfolk’s Joy had become a cold and deserted Lüya Shoal! But then again, if it had not been so, how could there have been the fisherfolk soldiers later on?

All along the road there was clamour and confusion, and it was a hard job before they reached Wohugou at last. Squire Sha came out to the manor gate to meet them, with Jiao Chi beside him. Ai Hu hurried forward to greet him and first handed back the eyebrow-high staff. Squire Sha told a manor hand to put it away, and then said to the fishermen, “Our rooms are cramped, so we can’t house you family by family. For now we must ask you good neighbours to put up with some inconvenience. The menfolk will all stay in the west court, and the womenfolk will all stay at the back with my daughter. When the new houses are built, we’ll give you each your own.” Everyone thanked him with one voice.

Sha Long invited Ai Hu, together with Zhang Li, Shi Yun, Meng and Jiao, into the hall. Ai Hu was the first to speak. “Where are my master, my adoptive father and Second Uncle Ding?” “You’ve come a little late, my good nephew,” said Squire Sha. “The three of them left for Xiangyang three days ago.” Ai Hu stamped his foot in spite of himself. “How can this be!” He picked up his bundle, ready to hurry after them. Sha Long stopped him. “Don’t be like that, nephew. They’ve been gone three days. Even if you set out now, you couldn’t catch them up. Why be in such a rush?” Ai Hu could do nothing about it and had to put his bundle down again. He had come in high spirits, and now he hung his head in dejection. Then, thinking it over, he saw that it was all the fault of his greed for wine: if he had not dawdled on the road, he would have been here long ago. Privately he regretted it bitterly.
