The true Pilgrim pours out his troubles on Mount Potalaka; The false Monkey King copies the document in the Water-Curtain Cave

Now, the Great Sage Sun rose into the air, angry and miserable. He wanted to return to Flower-Fruit Mountain and the Water-Curtain Cave, but feared the little demons there would laugh at him for saying one thing and doing another, for lacking the mettle of a true man. He wanted to seek refuge in the Heavenly Palace, but feared they would not let him stay long. He wanted to go to the islands in the sea, but was ashamed to face the immortals of the Three Islands. He wanted to make for the Dragon Palace, but his pride would not let him beg the Dragon King for help. Truly he had no one to turn to, nowhere to lean. Brooding bitterly, he said to himself, “Enough, enough, enough! I’ll go back to my master. That is still the way to attain the true fruit.”

He lowered his cloud and went straight to stand before Sanzang’s horse. “Master, forgive your disciple this once! I’ll never dare act so savagely again. I’ll follow your teaching. Whatever you do, let me guard you on the journey to the Western Heaven!” The Tang Monk saw him but gave no answer. He reined in his horse and began reciting the Band-Tightening Spell. Over and over he recited it, more than twenty times, until the Great Sage fell to the ground and the band sank about an inch into his flesh. Only then did he stop. “Why haven’t you gone back? Why come pestering me again?” Pilgrim could only cry, “Stop reciting, stop reciting! I have somewhere to live. I’m only afraid you won’t reach the Western Heaven without me.” Sanzang flew into a rage. “You ape, you’ve killed and destroyed lives and dragged me into so much guilt! Now I truly want no more of you. Whether I can get there or not is no concern of yours. Go, go! Delay even a little and I’ll recite the True Words again. This time I won’t stop until the band squeezes your brains out!” The Great Sage could scarcely bear the pain. Seeing that his master would not relent, he had no choice but to mount his somersault cloud again and rise into the air. Suddenly a thought came to him. “This monk has betrayed my devotion. I’ll go to Potalaka Cliff and tell the Bodhisattva Guanyin about it.”

Fine Great Sage! He wheeled his somersault cloud round and, in less than a double-hour, reached the great South Sea. He brought his auspicious light to a halt, went straight up Mount Potalaka and barged into the Purple Bamboo Grove. There he suddenly met Pilgrim Mu Zha, who greeted him with a bow. “Where are you going, Great Sage?” Pilgrim said, “To see the Bodhisattva.” Mu Zha led him to the mouth of Tide-Sound Cave, where the boy Sudhana also bowed in greeting. “What brings you here, Great Sage?” Pilgrim said, “I have a matter to lay before the Bodhisattva.” Hearing the words ‘lay before’, Sudhana laughed. “What a spiteful tongue you have, monkey! Just as when I captured the Tang Monk and you bullied me. My Bodhisattva is a saint of boundless goodness: great in kindness and compassion, great in vows and in the Great Vehicle, a saviour from suffering and peril, without limit or measure. What fault can you find with her that you want to lay a complaint against her?” Pilgrim was full of misery already. At these words his anger flared. With a sharp “Hah!” he shouted Sudhana back a step. “You ungrateful little beast, forgetting every kindness! What a fool you are! When you were a demon making trouble, I asked the Bodhisattva to subdue you and bring you to the right path under her blessing. Now you have all this bliss and endless life, freedom and ease, a lifespan equal to Heaven’s, yet instead of bowing to thank Old Sun, you insult me! I have something to tell the Bodhisattva and ask her help with. Why call me spiteful and say I’ve come to accuse her?” Sudhana smiled appeasingly. “Still such a touchy monkey! I was only teasing. Why turn angry at once?”
