The spirit runs wild and slays the bandits; The Way goes astray and lets the Mind-Ape loose

A poem says:

The spirit tower with nothing in it is called clear;in utter stillness, not a single thought is born.Keep monkey and horse firmly in hand, let neither run loose;guard your spirit carefully, let it never grow unruly.

Cast out the six thieves, grasp the Three Vehicles; let all ties fall away, and clarity comes of itself.

Destroy lust’s evil for ever and rise to the realm of truth;sit and enjoy the Western City of Ultimate Bliss.

Now, with a resolve that could bite nails and chew iron, Tang Sanzang had staked his life on preserving his uncorrupted body. Blessed with the help of Pilgrim and the others, who killed the scorpion spirit, he was rescued from Pipa Cave. Nothing further happened along the road, and soon it was the season of summer. This is what they saw:

Warm winds keep bringing the scent of wild orchids;the cleansing rain has just cleared, and new bamboo is cool.Mugwort fills the hills, with no traveller to gather it;sweet-flag flowers fill the streams, each vying in fragrance.Bees delight in the bright, tender pomegranate blooms;yellow sparrows run wild in the deep shade of riverside willows. How can one wrap horn-shaped rice parcels on the long road?Dragon boats should mourn on the Miluo River.

Master and disciples travelled on, enjoying the sights of the Double Fifth Festival, though they let this midsummer holiday pass without observing it. Suddenly another high mountain blocked their way. The elder reined in and turned to call, “Wukong, there’s a mountain ahead. I’m afraid there may be demons again. Be sure to take care.” Pilgrim and the others said, “Set your mind at rest, Master. We have pledged our lives and given ourselves to the faith. What demons need we fear?” The elder was delighted to hear it. He flicked his whip to urge the fine horse on, gave the dragon its head and sped ahead. In a moment they were up on the mountain crags. They raised their heads and looked. Truly:

On the summit, pines and cypresses reach the blue clouds;brambles on the rock walls hang with wild vines.Ten thousand fathoms of towering height,a thousand tiers of sheer-cut slopes. The towering peaks and ridges are steep, the sheer-cut ravines and cliffs are deep.Green moss carpets shaded rocks;ancient junipers and tall locust trees make great woods.Deep in the woods they hear secluded birds, whose clever, mellow calls deserve a song.Water flows through the ravine like pouring jade;fallen flowers beside the road lie heaped like gold. The mountain is rough and hard to travel: in ten steps not half a step is level.Foxes and deer appear in twos;white deer and dark apes greet them in pairs.Suddenly a tiger’s roar strikes terror into the heart;a crane’s cry shakes the ear and pierces the Court of Heaven.Yellow plums and red apricots offer food;the wild grasses and flowers have names they do not know.

The four entered the mountain and walked slowly for a long time, until they had crossed the summit. Down the western slope lay a stretch of level ground. Zhu Bajie, showing off his vigour, had Sha Monk carry the luggage while he raised his rake in both hands and went ahead to hurry the horse. But the horse had no fear of him at all. For all the Idiot’s clicking and clucking, it still plodded along without a hint of haste. Pilgrim said, “Brother, why are you driving him on? Just let him walk slowly.” Bajie said, “It’s getting late. We’ve been walking all day since we went up the mountain, and my belly is empty. Let’s all move a little faster, find a house and beg some food.” Pilgrim said, “In that case, let me make him hurry.” He shook his gold-banded cudgel and gave a shout. The horse shot off at the reins, swift as flight, swift as an arrow, and raced ahead along the level road.

Why, you may ask, was the horse afraid of Pilgrim but not of Bajie? Five hundred years before, the Jade Emperor had appointed Pilgrim to tend the horses in the Imperial Stables of the Great Luo Heaven, with the title Keeper of the Horses. The effect has lasted to this day: every horse fears a monkey.
