The Great Sage escapes from the Eight Trigrams Furnace; The Mind-Ape is stilled beneath Five Elements Mountain

Wealth, honour and fame are allotted by ties from lives before; never let your heart deceive.Be upright, open and true:loyalty and goodness bear ever deeper fruit.A little reckless pride brings Heaven’s punishment;if it does not strike today, its time will come.Ask the Lord of the East:why do disasters crowd upon us now?Only because an ambitious heart plots without bounds, ignores high and low, and overturns the rules.

Now, the Great Sage Equal to Heaven was taken by the heavenly soldiers to the Demon-Execution Terrace and bound to the Demon-Subduing Pillar. They hacked with sabres and chopped with axes, stabbed with spears and gouged with swords, but there was no hope of hurting him. The Southern Dipper Star urgently ordered the gods of the Fire Department to roast him in flames, but they could not burn him either. Then the gods of the Thunder Department were told to hammer him with thunder wedges, and these did not so much as damage a hair. The Mighty Ghost King and the others reported to the throne: “Your Majesty, we do not know where this Great Sage learned the art of protecting his body. Your servants have hacked with sabres, chopped with axes, struck him with thunder and burned him with fire, yet we cannot hurt him in the slightest. What are we to do?” The Jade Emperor said, “If this wretch is so and so, how are We to deal with him?” Lord Lao the Most High at once addressed the throne. “That monkey ate the immortal peaches, drank the imperial wine and stole the immortal elixir. My five gourds of elixir held both finished and unfinished pills, and he swallowed them all. Working his samadhi fire, he forged them into a single mass, making his whole body as hard as diamond; it cannot readily be harmed. Better let this old Daoist take him away and put him in the Eight Trigrams Furnace. With gentle and fierce fires I shall refine my elixir out of him, and his body will turn to ashes of itself.” The Jade Emperor ordered the Six Ding and Six Jia to untie him and hand him over to Lord Lao, who received the decree and departed. Meanwhile, Erlang the Manifest Saint was summoned and rewarded with a hundred golden flowers, a hundred bottles of imperial wine, a hundred pills of reverted elixir, rare treasures, lustrous pearls, brocades and embroideries, to share with his sworn brothers. The True Lord thanked the Emperor for his bounty and returned to the Guan River Mouth; let us leave him there.

At the Tushita Palace, Lord Lao removed the Great Sage’s ropes and the implement piercing his shoulder blades, pushed him into the Eight Trigrams Furnace, and told the Daoists tending the furnace and the boys stoking it to fan up the fire and begin the refining. Now, the furnace was divided according to the eight trigrams: Qian, Kan, Gen, Zhen, Xun, Li, Kun and Dui. The Great Sage slipped into the compartment of Xun. Xun is wind, and where there is wind there is no fire. But the wind stirred up smoke, which scorched both his eyes red and left him with a lasting eye complaint. That is why they are called his ‘fiery eyes and golden pupils’.

Time truly flies. Before anyone knew it, seven times seven days — forty-nine in all — had passed, and Lord Lao’s firing was complete. One day he opened the furnace to take out the elixir. The Great Sage was covering his eyes with both hands, rubbing them and shedding tears, when he heard a noise at the furnace mouth. He opened his eyes wide, saw the light and could contain himself no longer. With one bound he leaped out, kicked the Eight Trigrams Furnace over with a crash and made for the door. The stokers, furnace tenders and Ding and Jia gods rushed in alarm to grab him, but he knocked them down one after another, like a white-browed tiger in a fit, a one-horned dragon driven mad. Lord Lao caught up and made a grab; the Great Sage flung him head over heels and broke free. He drew the As-You-Will cudgel from his ear, shook it in the wind until it was as thick as a bowl, and held it in his hand as before. Striking without distinction, he threw the Heavenly Palace into turmoil again. The Nine Luminaries shut themselves behind their doors; the Four Heavenly Kings vanished without a trace. What a monkey spirit! There is a poem to prove it. A poem says:

His body of primal unity is true, at one with what precedes Heaven;through countless aeons and changes he remains spontaneous.Vast and elusive, without contrived action, he is wholly Great Unity;abiding unmoved in suchness, he is called the primal mystery. What the furnace long refines is neither lead nor mercury;immortal beyond the world, he was an immortal from the first.Endless transformations give way to more transformations;speak no more of the three refuges and five precepts.

Another poem:

A spark of spirit light penetrates the great void;that cudgel of his does just the same.Long or short as its wielder wills, sideways or upright it spreads, rolls up and unfurls.

Another poem:

The monkey’s body of the Way accords with the human heart;the heart is the monkey — a meaning that runs deep.To call the Great Sage equal to Heaven is no empty claim;did those who made him Keeper of the Horses understand him?Horse and monkey together are intent and heart;bind them fast, tether them tight, and seek no farther afield. All forms return to truth through one principle, sharing the Tathagata Buddha’s realization in the Twin Grove.

This time the Monkey King paid no heed to rank, striking east and fighting west with his iron cudgel. Not a single god could stop him. He fought his way into the Hall of Clear Light, just outside the Hall of Divine Mists. Fortunately Divine Officer Wang, assistant to the True Lord Who Protects the Sages, was guarding the hall. Seeing the Great Sage rampage, he drew his golden whip and stepped forward to block him. “You wretched ape! Where are you going? With me here, you will not run wild.” The Great Sage would hear no argument. He raised his cudgel and struck, and the Divine Officer lifted his whip to meet him. The two tangled together before the Hall of Divine Mists. What a fight!

One, loyal and brave, is famed for his honour;one, defying Heaven and deceiving his sovereign, has an evil name. The base and the good are fortunately matched, two heroes staking all on the contest. The iron cudgel is fierce, the golden whip swift; how can the upright and impartial endure such wrong? This one is the Venerable of Great Unity Who Manifests in the Sound of Thunder;that one, the Great Sage Equal to Heaven, a monstrous ape.Golden whip and iron cudgel, both are mighty, immortal weapons of the divine palace.Today they display their power at the Hall of Divine Mists;how splendid each one’s heroic skill! One betrays his conscience to seize the Palace of the Dipper and the Ox;one strains every sinew to uphold the realm of the mystic sages.Fiercely they contest their magic, neither yielding;whip and cudgel fly back and forth, with neither winning.

The two fought on, with neither gaining the victory. The True Lord Who Protects the Sages had already sent his officers with a dispatch to the Thunder Office, summoning thirty-six thunder generals. All came and ringed the Great Sage at the centre, each fighting ferociously in a desperate battle. The Great Sage showed not a trace of fear. With his As-You-Will cudgel he parried left, blocked right, guarded behind and met attacks in front. Then, seeing the thunder generals’ sabres, spears, swords and halberds, whips, bar maces, clubs and hammers, battleaxes, axes and golden melon maces, tufted sickles and crescent spades pressing in thick and fast, he shook himself and changed into a form with three heads and six arms. He shook his As-You-Will cudgel into three cudgels and wielded them in all six hands. Like a spinning wheel, they whirled round and round, flying through the centre of the ring. None of the thunder gods could get near. Truly:

Round and whole, bright and blazing, enduring from all antiquity — how can anyone learn to be this?Fire cannot burn him;when has water ever drowned him?One radiant mani jewel, unharmed by sword, halberd, sabre or spear. He can be good, he can be evil; the good and evil before us are his to enact. In goodness he becomes a Buddha or an immortal;in evil he wears fur and sprouts horns. With boundless transformations he troubles the Heavenly Palace;thunder generals and divine soldiers cannot catch him.

The gods had the Great Sage hemmed in, but could not get close to him; they shouted and fought in confusion. The commotion soon alarmed the Jade Emperor, who ordered the Roaming Divine Officer and the True Lord Who Supports the Sages to go to the West and ask the venerable Buddha to subdue him.

The two holy ones received the decree and went straight to the Thunderclap Monastery in the sacred realm of Spirit Mountain. They paid their respects to the Four Vajra Guardians and the Eight Bodhisattvas, then asked to be announced. The gods went to the precious lotus throne to report, and the Buddha summoned the visitors. The two holy ones circled the Buddha three times in reverence and stood below the throne. “What business has the Jade Emperor,” the Buddha asked, “to trouble you two holy ones to come down here?” They replied, “Some time ago a monkey was born on Flower-Fruit Mountain. He displayed his magic there, gathered the monkeys and threw the world into turmoil. The Jade Emperor offered him amnesty and made him Keeper of the Horses, but he thought the office too low and rebelled. Heavenly King Li and Prince Nezha were sent to capture him, without success. He was offered amnesty again and made Great Sage Equal to Heaven, at first an office with no salary. Put in temporary charge of the Peach Garden, he stole the peaches. He went to the Jade Pool, stole the food and wine and disrupted the grand banquet. Emboldened by wine, he slipped into the Tushita Palace, stole Lord Lao’s immortal elixir and rebelled, leaving the Heavenly Palace. The Jade Emperor then sent a hundred thousand heavenly soldiers, but they could not subdue him either. Later Guanshiyin recommended the True Lord Erlang and his sworn brothers to pursue him. He kept changing his shape, but luckily Lord Lao threw his Diamond Ring and struck him, allowing Erlang to capture him. He was brought before the throne and ordered executed, but sabres and axes, fire and thunder could not harm him. Lord Lao obtained permission to take him away and refine him with fire. When the furnace was opened after forty-nine days, he leaped out of the Eight Trigrams Furnace, drove back the heavenly soldiers and went straight into the Hall of Clear Light, outside the Hall of Divine Mists. Divine Officer Wang, assistant to the True Lord Who Protects the Sages, stopped him and fought him fiercely. Then thirty-six thunder generals were summoned and surrounded him, but still they cannot get near. Matters are desperate, so the Jade Emperor expressly begs the Buddha to save his throne.” At this the Buddha told the Bodhisattvas, “Sit quietly here in the Dharma Hall and keep to your meditation seats. I shall go and tame this demon to save the throne, then return.”

The Buddha called the two venerable disciples Ananda and Kasyapa to accompany him, left the Thunderclap Monastery and went straight outside the gate of the Hall of Divine Mists. Suddenly shouts thundered in his ears: the thirty-six thunder generals had the Great Sage surrounded. The Buddha gave his command: “Tell the thunder generals to lay down their arms and open their lines. Call the Great Sage out so that I may ask what powers he has.” The generals withdrew as ordered. The Great Sage also put away his magical form, resumed his own shape and came forward seething with anger. “Where have you come from, holy man,” he shouted harshly, “to dare stop this fight and question me?” The Buddha smiled. “I am the Venerable Shakyamuni of the Western Land of Ultimate Bliss. Homage to Amitabha Buddha! I hear that you have been running wild in your boorish way, repeatedly rebelling against the Heavenly Palace. Where were you born and raised, in what year did you attain the Way, and why are you so violent?” The Great Sage said, “I am:

A spirit immortal born of Heaven and Earth,an old ape of Flower-Fruit Mountain. The Water-Curtain Cave is my home;I sought friends and a master, and grasped the supreme mystery.I perfected many arts of lasting lifeand learned transformations without bounds.Finding the mortal world too cramped,I set my heart on dwelling in the jewelled heavens. The Hall of Divine Mists is no man’s forever;the kings of men have each had their turn through the ages. The strongest should be sovereign — he ought to yield to me;here is the one hero who dares claim first place.”

The Buddha gave a cold laugh. “You are only a monkey that has acquired powers. How dare you betray your conscience and try to seize the Jade Emperor’s throne? He has cultivated himself since childhood and endured one thousand seven hundred and fifty aeons of hardship. Each aeon is a hundred and twenty-nine thousand six hundred years. Work out how many years that makes before he could enjoy this boundless Great Way! You are a beast only now entering human life for the first time. How can you make such claims? Shame on you! Shame on you! You are shortening your allotted life. Take refuge at once and stop this nonsense. I fear you will meet a deadly blow and lose your life in an instant — what a pity for your original nature!” The Great Sage said, “He may have begun young and cultivated himself for ages, but that gives him no right to stay here forever. As the saying goes, ‘Emperors take turns; next year it comes to my house.’ Just make him move out and hand the Heavenly Palace over to me, and that will settle it. If he refuses, I’ll keep stirring things up, and there will never be peace.” The Buddha said, “Apart from the arts of immortality and transformation, what other ability have you, to dare take possession of the Heavenly Palace’s sacred realm?” The Great Sage said, “I have plenty of skills! I possess the seventy-two transformations and live forever, never growing old through countless aeons. I can ride the somersault cloud and cover a hundred and eight thousand li in one leap. Why shouldn’t I sit on Heaven’s throne?” The Buddha said, “I shall make a wager with you. If you have the skill to leap out of the palm of my right hand in one somersault, you win. There will be no need for weapons or bitter fighting: I shall ask the Jade Emperor to live in the West and give you the Heavenly Palace. If you cannot leap out of my palm, go back to the lower world as a demon, cultivate yourself for a few more aeons, and then come and make your demands.” At this the Great Sage laughed to himself. “What a fool this Buddha is! Old Sun can go a hundred and eight thousand li in one somersault. That palm of his is less than a foot across — how could I fail to jump out of it?” He called out at once, “If that’s what you say, can you make it happen?” The Buddha said, “I can, I can.” He opened his right hand; it was about the size of a lotus leaf.

The Great Sage put away his As-You-Will cudgel, summoned his divine might and leaped into the Buddha’s palm. “I’m off!” he said. Look at him go, a streak of cloudlight, vanishing without shape or shadow. With his eye of wisdom the Buddha watched the Monkey King spinning on like a windmill, never stopping, always pressing forward. As the Great Sage travelled, he suddenly saw five flesh-red pillars holding up a mass of blue-green vapour. “This is the end of the road,” he said. “When I get back, the Buddha will bear witness, and I shall certainly take my seat in the Hall of Divine Mists.” Then he thought again. “Wait! Let me leave a mark, so I’ll have something to show the Buddha.” He plucked out a hair, breathed immortal breath over it and cried, “Change!” It became a double-tipped brush laden with thick ink. On the middle pillar he wrote a line of large characters:

“The Great Sage Equal to Heavenwas here.”

When he had finished, he put the hair away. Then, showing no dignity at all, he pissed a puddle of monkey urine at the foot of the first pillar. He turned his somersault cloud round and went straight back to where he had started. Standing in the Buddha’s palm, he said, “I’ve been there and now I’m back. Tell the Jade Emperor to hand the Heavenly Palace over to me.”

The Buddha scolded him. “You pissing monkey! You never even left my palm.” The Great Sage said, “You don’t know. I went to the end of Heaven and saw five flesh-red pillars holding up a mass of blue-green vapour. I left a mark there. Dare you come with me and look?” The Buddha said, “No need to go. Just lower your head and look for yourself.” The Great Sage opened his fiery eyes and golden pupils wide and looked down. There, written on the middle finger of the Buddha’s right hand, were the words “The Great Sage Equal to Heaven was here.” And in the web of his thumb the stench of monkey urine still lingered. The Great Sage was startled. “Can this be? Can this be? I wrote those words on a pillar holding up Heaven — how did they get onto his finger? Can he have some magic that knows the future before it happens? I don’t believe it. I won’t believe it! Let me go again.”

Our fine Great Sage leaped up in haste to spring out once more. But the Buddha turned his palm over and thrust the Monkey King out through the Western Gate of Heaven. He changed his five fingers into five linked mountains of metal, wood, water, fire and earth, named them ‘Five Elements Mountain’, and gently pinned him beneath them. The thunder gods, Ananda and Kasyapa all joined their palms in praise. “Excellent! Excellent!

Once hatched from an egg, he learned to be a manand set his will on practice, truly attaining the Way.Through countless aeons he dwelt unmoved in a sacred realm;one sudden change has scattered his spirit. He defied Heaven, deceived his sovereign and coveted high office, insulted sages, stole elixir and broke the great bonds of order. His evil has filled its measure, and now comes its reward;who knows what day will see him rise again?”

Having put an end to the demon monkey’s rampage, the Buddha called Ananda and Kasyapa to return with him to the Western Land of Ultimate Bliss. Just then Marshal Tianpeng and Tianyou hurried out of the Hall of Divine Mists. “Please wait a moment, Buddha. Our sovereign is coming in his imperial procession.” The Buddha turned to look. Soon there appeared the luan carriage of eight splendours and a precious canopy of nine radiances. Mystic songs and wondrous music sounded, boundless divine hymns were chanted, precious flowers scattered and true incense sprayed. The procession came straight before the Buddha, and the Jade Emperor thanked him. “Your great power has rid Us of this evil. We hope the Buddha will stay a day, so that We may ask the immortals to join in a banquet of thanks.” The Buddha dared not refuse. He joined his palms and answered gratefully, “This old monk came at the Great Celestial Venerable’s command. What power can I claim? It is all the great good fortune of the Celestial Venerable and the gods. How could I presume to trouble you with thanks?” The Jade Emperor ordered the gods of the Thunder Department to go in different directions and invite the Three Pure Ones, the Four Emperors, the Five Elders of the Five Directions, the Six Offices, the Seven Primordial Stars, the Eight Ultimates, the Nine Luminaries, the Ten Capitals, the thousand perfected ones and the myriad sages to join the gathering and thank the Buddha for his grace. He also told the Four Great Heavenly Masters and the immortal maidens of the Nine Heavens to throw open the Golden Gates of the Jade Capital, the Palace of the Supreme Mystery and the Jade Hall of Cavernous Yang, seat the Buddha high on the Seven-Treasure Spirit Terrace, set out places for every rank, and prepare dragon livers, phoenix marrow, jade nectar and immortal peaches.

Before long they arrived: the Celestial Venerable of the Primordial Beginning of Jade Purity, the Celestial Venerable of Numinous Treasure of Highest Purity, the Celestial Venerable of the Way and Its Virtue of Great Purity, the True Lords of the Five Breaths, the Star Lords of the Five Dippers, the Three Officials and Four Saints, the Nine Luminaries, the Left Assistant, the Right Supporter, the Heavenly King and Nezha, and all the other numinous powers of the mystic void. With banners paired and pennants and canopies doubled, all brought lustrous pearls and rare treasures, longevity fruits and wondrous flowers. They bowed before the Buddha and presented their offerings. “We are grateful for the Buddha’s boundless power in subduing the demon monkey. The Great Celestial Venerable has prepared a banquet and summoned us all to express our thanks. Would the Buddha give this gathering a name?” Accepting their request, the Buddha said, “If it needs a name, let it be the Banquet to Bring Peace to Heaven.” The elder immortals all answered with one voice. “A fine Banquet to Bring Peace to Heaven! A fine Banquet to Bring Peace to Heaven!” Then they took their seats. Goblets went round, cups passed from hand to hand, flowers were tucked into their hair and zithers played. A splendid gathering indeed! There is a poem to prove it. A poem says:

The monkey wrecked the feast of immortal peaches;the Banquet to Bring Peace to Heaven surpasses it.Dragon banners and luan carriages glow with auspicious light;precious tallies, standards and pennants float in blessed vapour.Immortal music and mystic songs have lovely cadences;phoenix flutes and jade pipes sound clear and high.Rich fragrance coils around the gathered immortals;the universe at peace, they hail the sacred court.

All were enjoying the gathering when the Queen Mother of the West led a company of immortal maidens, heavenly attendants and beautiful women drifting and dancing before the Buddha. She made her obeisance and said, “The demon monkey disrupted the Peach Banquet before, and my invitation to the immortals and Buddhas came to nothing. Now the Buddha’s great power has forged bonds for that unruly monkey, and we rejoice in the Banquet to Bring Peace to Heaven. I have nothing with which to thank you, but here are several immortal peaches from the great trees, picked with my own freshly washed hands, which I offer to you.” Truly:

Half red, half green, they breathe a sweet fragrance;their splendid immortal roots have grown for ten thousand years. How laughable the peaches of Wuling’s Peach Blossom Spring —how could they rival the still finer fruit of Heaven?Tender and delicately purple-streaked, rare within the world;with pale-yellow stones and sweet clear flesh, unmatched on earth. They lengthen life and years, and can transform the body;anyone destined to eat them is no ordinary being.

The Buddha joined his palms and thanked the Queen Mother. Then she had her immortal women and maidens sing and dance, and all the immortals at the feast applauded and praised them. Truly:

Heavenly fragrance, faint and floating, fills the seats;immortal stamens and blossoms shower down.Splendour fills the Golden Gates of the Jade Capital;rare treasures and strange delicacies are beyond price. In pairs they live as long as Heaven;two by two they add countless aeons to their years.Let mulberry fields turn into seas, and seas change back again:they themselves feel neither fear nor surprise.

As the Queen Mother’s immortal women and maidens sang and danced, cups and drinking tallies crossed in a merry bustle. Before long they suddenly caught:

A strange fragrance reaching every nose, startling all the stars and mansions in the hall. The heavenly immortals and the Buddha lower their cups;all raise their heads and wait to see.An old man appears among the stars, sacred lingzhi in his hands, flying through embroidered mists. His gourd holds elixir of ten thousand years;the precious register inscribes his name for a thousand ages of life.Within his cave, Heaven and Earth are his to roam;within his flask, sun and moon unfold at will.He wanders happily at leisure over the four seas;free and easy among the Ten Isles, he mingles at leisure. How many times has he been drunk at the Peach Banquet? When he wakes, the bright moon is unchanged.Long of head, great of ear, short of body,in the southern quarter he is called the Old Man of Longevity (Laoshou).

The Longevity Star had arrived as well. He paid his respects to the Jade Emperor, then greeted the Buddha and expressed his thanks. “At first, when I heard that Lord Lao had taken the demon monkey to the Tushita Palace to refine him, I thought peace would surely follow. I never expected him to break out again. Fortunately the Buddha has subdued the monster so well that a banquet has been prepared in thanks. I heard the news and came. I have nothing else to offer, only these purple lingzhi, jade grasses, green lotus roots and golden elixir, which I respectfully present.” A poem says:

Green lotus roots and golden elixir are offered to Shakyamuni;the Buddha’s years are as many as the Ganges sands.Peace and everlasting joy: the brocade of the three vehicles;health and lasting life: the blossoms of the nine ranks.Within the gate of no-form he is the true master of the Dharma;in the heaven of form and emptiness is the immortals’ home.Heaven, Earth and all the land hail him as patriarch;his sixteen-foot golden body has boundless blessings and life.

The Buddha gladly accepted with thanks. The Longevity Star took his seat, and the goblets and cups went round again. Then the Barefoot Immortal arrived. He bowed his head before the Jade Emperor, then thanked the Buddha. “Deeply grateful for your power in subduing the demon monkey, I have nothing to show my respect but these two jiaoli pears and a few fire dates, which I present to you.” A poem says:

The Barefoot Immortal’s dates and pears are fragrant;he offers them respectfully to Amitabha, whose years are long. The Seven-Treasure Lotus Throne is steady as a mountain;the flower seat, worth a thousand gold pieces, is adorned like brocade. That his life matches Heaven and Earth is no false claim;that his blessings rival mighty waves is no wild boast.Blessings and long life are truly as one could wish,in that Western Land of leisure and ultimate bliss.

The Buddha thanked him too and told Ananda and Kasyapa to put away every offering. Then he thanked the Jade Emperor for the banquet. Everyone was thoroughly drunk. Just then a patrolling divine officer came to report, “The Great Sage has poked his head out.” The Buddha said, “No matter, no matter.” He took a slip of paper from his sleeve, bearing six golden syllables: “Om mani padme hum.” He handed it to Ananda and told him to paste it on the mountaintop. The venerable disciple received it, went out through Heaven’s gate and reached the summit of Five Elements Mountain. He pasted the paper firmly onto a square stone, and at once the mountain took root and all its seams closed. The monkey could still draw breath, crawl his hands out and struggle a little. Ananda returned to report, “The paper has been pasted in place.”

The Buddha took leave of the Jade Emperor and the gods and went out through Heaven’s gate with the two venerable disciples. Then, moved once more by compassion, he recited a true-word spell and summoned an earth god for Five Elements Mountain. Together with the Guardians of the Five Directions, this god was to live on the mountain and watch over the prisoner. When the monkey was hungry, they were to give him iron pellets to eat; when he was thirsty, molten copper to drink. When his punishment for his sins had run its course, someone would come to rescue him. Truly:

The demon monkey boldly rebelled against the Heavenly Palace, but the Buddha subdued him with a turn of his hand.Thirsty, he drinks molten copper to endure the years;hungry, he eats iron pellets to pass the time.Heaven’s punishment confines and torments him;his lot is bleak, yet he is glad his life is long.If the hero can struggle free and show his strength again,in years to come he will serve the Buddha and journey west.

Another poem says:

He flaunted his prowess, and his mighty power grew;subduing dragons and tigers, he showed off his clever arts.He stole peaches and wine as he roamed Heaven’s courts, received his appointment and imperial favour in the Jade Capital. His evil filled its measure, and his body is confined;his roots of goodness live on, and his spirit still rises. To escape at last from the Buddha’s hand,he must await the holy monk who will appear in the Tang.
