Our Buddha makes scriptures to spread ultimate bliss;Guanyin obeys his command and journeys to Chang’an

Ask about the gate of meditation: countless seekers pursue it, yet often grow old in vain.Grinding a brick into a mirror, storing snow for food — how many young lives have lost their way!A hair swallows the great sea, a mustard seed holds Mount Sumeru, and the golden ascetic smiles. With awakening, one surpasses the ten stages and three vehicles;held fast in delusion, one remains among the four forms of birth and six paths.Who can hear, before the cliff where thoughts cease, beneath the tree that casts no shade, a cuckoo’s cry at spring dawn? The road to Caoxi is perilous, clouds lie deep on Vulture Peak, and here no word comes from old friends. On an icy cliff a thousand feet high, a five-petalled lotus opens; curtains hang in the ancient hall and incense curls. At that hour, discern the source and its flowing streams, and you will see the Dragon King’s Three Treasures.

This lyric is called ‘Su Wu in slow measure’. Now, our Buddha took leave of the Jade Emperor and returned to the Thunderclap Monastery. This is what he saw: three thousand Buddhas, five hundred arhats, eight Vajra Guardians and countless Bodhisattvas, every one holding standards, pennants, precious canopies, rare treasures and immortal flowers, drawn up to welcome him beneath the Twin Grove of sala trees in the immortal realm of Spirit Mountain. The Buddha halted his auspicious cloud and told them, “With the profoundest prajna I have surveyed the Three Realms. The root and source of nature are, in the end, quiescent extinction. Like empty space, they possess nothing at all.

I have subdued the wayward monkey:let no one conceive this as a deed.Names begin birth and death;such is the nature of the Dharma.”

With that he released the light of his relics. Forty-two white rainbows filled the sky, joining north to south. At the sight, the assembly bowed in homage and took refuge. Before long, gathering clouds of blessing and coloured mist, he ascended the lotus throne of the highest rank and seated himself in perfect composure. The three thousand Buddhas, five hundred arhats, eight Vajra Guardians and four Bodhisattvas joined their palms, came forward and paid their respects. “Who was it,” they asked, “that made turmoil in the Heavenly Palace and disrupted the Peach Banquet?” The Buddha said, “A demon monkey born on Flower-Fruit Mountain. His crimes rise to Heaven and defy description. None of the heavenly generals could subdue him. Though Erlang captured him and Lord Lao refined him with fire, they could not hurt him. When I went there, he was flaunting his prowess among the thunder generals, showing off his powers. I stopped the fighting and asked where he came from. He said he had supernatural powers, could change his shape and ride a somersault cloud a hundred and eight thousand li in one leap. I made a wager with him. He could not get out of my hand, so I caught him in my grasp, turned my fingers into Five Elements Mountain and sealed him beneath it. The Jade Emperor threw open his golden gates and jewelled palaces, gave me the seat of honour, and held the Banquet to Bring Peace to Heaven in thanks. Only then did I take my leave and return.” The assembly heard this with delight and praised him to the skies.

Their thanks offered, they withdrew by rank, each attending to their duties, all rejoicing in their natural purity. Truly:

Blessed mists spread over India;rainbow light surrounds the World-Honoured One.Foremost in the Westis the gate of the formless Dharma King.Often dark apes offer fruitand deer carry flowers in their mouths;blue luan birds danceand bright phoenixes sing;spirit tortoises present long lifeand immortal cranes hold lingzhi in their beaks. At ease in the Pure Land of Jetavana, they enjoy the Dharma realm of the Dragon Palace.Flowers open daily, fruit ripens at every hour.Through stillness they return to truth;through meditation they attain true fruition.Neither perishing nor being born, neither increasing nor diminishing. They come and go among floating mists and rosy clouds;untouched by heat or cold, they keep no count of years.

A poem says:

Free to come and go, they wander as they please, with neither fear nor sorrow. In the field of ultimate bliss all is open and at ease;throughout the great thousandfold world there is no spring or autumn.

The Buddha dwelt in the great Thunderclap Monastery on Spirit Mountain. One day he called together the Buddhas, arhats, guardians, Bodhisattvas, Vajra Guardians, monks and nuns, and said, “Since I subdued the wayward ape and brought peace to Heaven, we have kept no count of months or years here. I suppose half a thousand years have passed in the mortal world. Today is the full moon of the first autumn month. I have a precious basin filled with a hundred kinds of wondrous flowers, a thousand kinds of rare fruit and other offerings. Will you share this Ullambana Assembly with me?” Every member of the assembly joined their palms and circled the Buddha three times in homage, accepting his invitation. The Buddha had Ananda hold the precious basin of flowers, fruit and offerings, and Kasyapa distribute them. Filled with gratitude, all presented poems of thanks.

The poem of blessings says:

Blessings: the Blessings Star shines before the World-Honoured One;blessings received grow deeper, farther-reaching and more enduring.Blessings: virtue without bounds lasts as long as Earth;blessings bring happy ties that join with Heaven.Blessings: broadly sown fields of merit flourish year by year;blessings form a vast, deep sea, growing firmer with every year.Blessings: filling Heaven and Earth, they shelter multitudes;blessings increase without measure, forever whole and complete.

The poem of honours says:

Honours: weighty as a mountain, while the bright phoenix sings;honours attend a peaceful age, as we invoke the Venus Star.Honours: ten thousand measures added, and the body hale;honours yield a thousand measures, and the world is at peace.Honours: a stipend equal to Heaven, forever secure;honours give a name as vast as the sea, and clearer still.Honours: favour stretches far to posterity, admired by many;honours and ranks without bounds bring glory to ten thousand lands.

The poem of long life says:

Long life: the Longevity Star offers splendour to the Buddha;long life’s domain opens radiant from this day.Long life: fruits fill the platter and give rise to blessed mists;long life’s flowers, freshly picked, adorn the lotus throne.Long life: poems, clear and graceful, hold many wonders;long life’s songs are tuned to the finest artistry.Long life: years extend to match the sun and moon;long life, like mountains and seas, endures at ease.

When the Bodhisattvas had finished their offerings, they asked the Buddha to reveal the root and explain the source and its flowing streams. The Buddha gently opened his benevolent mouth, expounded the great Dharma and proclaimed true attainment, teaching the wondrous scriptures of the three vehicles and the Surangama Sutra’s teaching on the five aggregates. This is what they saw: heavenly dragons encircled him, and flowers rained down in profusion. Truly:

The meditative mind shines clear as the moon in a thousand rivers;true nature holds the sky of ten thousand miles in its pure depths.

When he had finished teaching, the Buddha told the assembly, “I have surveyed the four great continents. The goodness and evil of their beings differ from place to place. In the Eastern Continent of Purvavideha they revere Heaven and honour Earth, their hearts cheerful and their spirits calm. In the Northern Continent of Uttarakuru they are fond of killing living creatures, but only to feed themselves; simple in nature and careless in feeling, they do little wanton harm. In our Western Continent of Aparagodaniya they neither covet nor kill, but nurture their vital breath and preserve their spirits. Though there are no supremely perfected ones, everyone enjoys a secure span of life. But in the Southern Continent of Jambudvipa they are greedy and lustful, delight in calamity, kill much and quarrel often — truly a fierce arena of tongues, an evil sea of disputes. I now have the Three Baskets of true scriptures, which can persuade people to do good.” Hearing this, the Bodhisattvas joined their palms and took refuge. They asked before the Buddha, “Which Three Baskets of true scriptures do you possess?” The Buddha said, “I have one basket of rules, which speaks of Heaven; one of treatises, which tells of Earth; and one of sutras, which delivers the dead. Together the Three Baskets comprise thirty-five divisions, amounting to fifteen thousand one hundred and forty-four scrolls: scriptures for cultivating truth, a gateway to upright goodness. I would send them to the Eastern Land, but the beings there are foolish. They slander the true words, fail to understand the essential meaning of my teaching, and slight the authentic tradition of yoga. How can I find someone with spiritual power to go to the Eastern Land, seek out a devout believer and have him endure a thousand mountains and seek scriptures across ten thousand waters, coming here to fetch the true scriptures? He would pass them on forever in the Eastern Land and guide its beings to goodness — a blessed destiny high as a mountain, a happy fruit of virtue deep as the sea. Who is willing to make the journey?” At once the Bodhisattva Guanyin approached the lotus throne, circled the Buddha three times in homage and said, “Your disciple is unworthy, but I am willing to go to the Eastern Land and find someone to fetch the scriptures.” The assembly raised their heads to look at the Bodhisattva:

Her understanding perfects the four virtues;her wisdom fills her golden body.Pearls and emeralds hang from her necklaces;fragrant circlets shine with precious gems. Her cloud-black hair is deftly piled in a coiled-dragon knot;embroidered ribbons float lightly like bright phoenix feathers.Jade-green clasps and a plain gauze robe are enveloped in auspicious light;a brocade skirt and golden chains are veiled in blessed vapour. Her brows are little crescents, her eyes twin stars. Her jade face is joyful by nature, her lips a touch of red.Sweet dew fills her pure vase year after year;the drooping willow set slantwise within stays green with every year.Delivering beings from the eight difficulties, saving all the multitude, her compassion is vast:thus she guards Mount Tai, dwells in the South Sea, seeks the voices of the suffering and brings relief. Ten thousand calls receive ten thousand answers; a thousand holy manifestations, a thousand miracles. Her orchid heart delights in purple bamboo;her fragrant nature loves the scented vines. She is the compassionate mistress of Mount Potalaka, the living Guanyin of Tide-Sound Cave.

At the sight, the Buddha was delighted. “No one else could undertake this,” he said. “Only the Venerable Guanyin, with her vast supernatural powers, can make the journey.” The Bodhisattva asked, “What instructions have you for your disciple as I go to the Eastern Land?” The Buddha said, “On this journey you must survey the route. You are not to travel high among the stars. Keep half in cloud, half in mist, with mountains and waters in view; carefully note the distances along the way, and impress them upon the scripture-seeker. I fear the devout believer may find the journey hard, so I shall give you five treasures.” He ordered Ananda and Kasyapa to bring out a brocade cassock and a nine-ringed monk’s staff, then told the Bodhisattva, “The scripture-seeker may wear this cassock and use this staff himself. If he is steadfast in coming here, wearing my cassock will keep him from falling into the cycle of rebirth; carrying my staff will protect him from deadly harm.” The Bodhisattva bowed in devotion and accepted them. Then the Buddha took out three bands and handed them to her. “This treasure is called the tightening band. Though the three look alike, each has a different use. I have three spells: the Golden Spell, the Band-Tightening Spell and the Restricting Spell. If on the road you meet a demon of great supernatural power, persuade him to become good and accompany the scripture-seeker as a disciple. If he will not submit to orders, put one of these bands on his head: it will take root in the flesh of itself. Recite the spell suited to the band, and his eyes will swell, his head will ache and his forehead will split. That will bring him into my fold.”

Hearing this, the Bodhisattva joyfully paid her respects and withdrew. She called Pilgrim Hui’an to accompany her. Hui’an wielded a solid iron cudgel weighing a thousand jin and served at her side as a mighty demon-subduing warrior. She made a bundle of the brocade cassock and had him carry it on his back. Concealing the golden bands and taking the monk’s staff in her hand, she went straight down Spirit Mountain. This journey was destined to bring about:

A son of the Buddha returns to fulfil his original vow;the elder Golden Cicada is clothed in sandalwood.

At the foot of the mountain, the Great Immortal Golden Summit (Jinding Daxian) met the Bodhisattva at the gate of Jade Truth Abbey and invited her in for tea. She dared not linger. “I have received the Buddha’s command,” she said, “and am going to the Eastern Land to seek someone to fetch the scriptures.” The Great Immortal asked, “When will the scripture-seeker arrive?” The Bodhisattva said, “It is not yet certain. Perhaps in two or three years he may reach this place.” She took leave of the Great Immortal and travelled half in cloud, half in mist, noting the route and its distances. There is a poem to prove it. A poem says:

To search ten thousand miles for one another needs no telling;yet who can say whose hopes will be fulfilled? If seeking a person should suddenly come to this, can my whole life’s quest be mere chance? To claim a method for passing on the Way becomes idle talk;explanations without belief are empty transmission too.I would pour out my heart and soul to find one who understands;I trust that destiny awaits upon the road ahead.

As master and disciple travelled on, they suddenly saw three thousand stretches of Weak Water: they had reached Flowing-Sand River. The Bodhisattva said, “Disciple, this place will be hard to pass. The scripture-seeker has mortal bones and flesh — how is he to cross?” Hui’an asked, “Master, how wide do you think the river is?” The Bodhisattva halted her cloud-borne steps to look. This is what she saw:

East it joins the sandy wastes, west it reaches foreign lands; south it extends to Wuge, north it opens to the Tatar lands.Eight hundred li across,it stretches countless thousands upstream and down. Its current seems the earth turning over;its rolling waves are mountains arching their backs.Vast and surging, boundless and blurred, its towering flood is heard ten li away.No immortal’s raft can reach this place,no lotus leaf stay afloat.Withered grasses and the setting sun line winding inlets;yellow clouds shadow the sun and darken the long embankments.Where could merchants come and go?When has an old fisherman ever made his home here?No geese alight on the level sands;apes cry from the far bank.Only the thick red knotweed flowers know this scene, while white water clover breathes its faint fragrance and sways as it will.

The Bodhisattva was still surveying the river when a loud splash rang out, and a demon leaped from the waves. He was hideous indeed. This was his appearance:

Neither green nor black, his face has an ill-omened hue;neither tall nor short, he is barefoot and all sinew. His flashing eyesare like two lamps beneath a stove;his gaping mouthis a butcher’s brazier. His fangs jut out like sword blades, his red hair tangles in a wild mop.One shout roars like thunder;his two running feet rush like a rolling wind.

A precious staff in his hand, the monster came ashore to seize the Bodhisattva, but Hui’an drew his solid iron cudgel and blocked him, shouting, “Stop there!” The monster raised his staff to meet him. The fierce fight they fought beside Flowing-Sand River was truly startling:

Mu Zha’s solid iron cudgelshows the guardian’s magic;the monster’s demon-quelling staffstrains to prove his prowess. Two silver pythons dance beside the river;a pair of divine monks charge upon the bank. That one displays the skills that hold Flowing-Sand in awe;this one wins great merit by defending Guanyin with all his strength. That one turns the waves and leaps the billows;this one spits mist and blasts out wind.Turning waves and leaping billows darken Heaven and Earth;spitting mist and blasting wind dim the sun and moon. That demon-quelling staffis like a white tiger leaving its mountain;this solid iron cudgelis a yellow dragon lying across the road. That one strikesas though parting grass to find a snake;this one lashes outlike a hawk diving through the pines. They fight till all is dim and dark, and stars shine bright;till mist surgesand Heaven and Earth grow hazy.Long dwelling in Weak Water, that one is unrivalled in ferocity;newly out from Spirit Mountain, this one seeks his first great deed.

Back and forth they fought for several dozen bouts, with neither winning. The monster caught the iron cudgel on his staff and said, “Where have you come from, monk, to dare stand against me?” Mu Zha said, “I am Mu Zha, Pilgrim Hui’an, second son of Heavenly King Li the Pagoda-Bearer. I am escorting my Master to the Eastern Land to find someone to fetch the scriptures. What monster are you, to dare block our road?” Only then did the monster understand. “I remember you,” he said. “You cultivate yourself with Guanyin of the South Sea in the Purple Bamboo Grove. Why have you come here?” Mu Zha said, “Isn’t that my Master there on the bank?”

At this the monster murmured assent again and again and put away his precious staff. He let Mu Zha haul him before Guanyin, bowed his head to the ground and pleaded, “Bodhisattva, forgive my crime and let me tell you my story. I am no evil demon. I was the Curtain-Raising General, attending the imperial carriage at the Hall of Divine Mists. But at the Peach Banquet I let a glass goblet slip and broke it. The Jade Emperor had me beaten eight hundred times, banished me to the lower world, and changed me into this shape. Besides that, once every seven days he sends a flying sword to pierce my chest and ribs more than a hundred times before it returns. That is why I suffer so. With no other choice, unable to bear hunger and cold, every two or three days I come out of the waves to find a traveller to eat. Today, in my ignorance, I never expected to offend the greatly compassionate Bodhisattva.” The Bodhisattva said, “You sinned in Heaven and were banished; now you take life like this as well. That is what they call adding crime to crime. I have received the Buddha’s command to go to the Eastern Land and find someone to fetch the scriptures. Why not enter my fold, take refuge in good attainment and accompany the scripture-seeker as a disciple to the Western Heaven, where you will worship the Buddha and seek the scriptures? I shall stop the flying sword from piercing you. Once your task is done, your crimes will be pardoned and you will be restored to your office. How does that strike you?” The monster said, “I am willing to take refuge in true attainment.” Then he went on, “Bodhisattva, I have eaten countless people here. Scripture-seekers have come on several occasions, and I ate them all. The heads of everyone I eat sink to the bottom when I throw them into Flowing-Sand River. Not even a goose feather floats in this water. Yet the skulls of nine scripture-seekers float on the surface and will not sink at all. I thought them strange things, strung them together on a cord and played with them when I had nothing to do. I fear the scripture-seeker may never reach this place — wouldn’t that ruin my prospects instead?” The Bodhisattva said, “How could he fail to arrive? Hang the skulls round your neck and wait for him. They will have their use.” The monster said, “If that is so, I gladly accept your teaching.” The Bodhisattva laid her hand on his crown and gave him the precepts. Pointing to the sand, she made Sha his surname and gave him the religious name Sha Wujing. He entered the Buddhist fold then and there and escorted her across the river. He cleansed his heart and purified his thoughts, took no more lives, and waited only for the scripture-seeker.

The Bodhisattva took leave of him and headed straight towards the Eastern Land with Mu Zha. After travelling a long while, they saw a tall mountain veiled in such evil vapour that they could not make their way up. They were about to ride a cloud across it when a fierce wind rose and another demon suddenly sprang into view. He too looked ferocious. This is what they saw:

A crumpled lotus seedpod of a face, with a dangling snout;ears like palm-leaf fans, and golden eyes glaring.Tusks sharp as steel files;his long mouth opens like a brazier.A golden helmet has its straps drawn tight beside his cheeks;silk cords bind armour like a python shedding scales. In his hand a rake probes like a dragon’s claw;at his waist a curved bow hangs like a half-moon.His bold, imposing might defies the Year God;his towering spirit overawes the gods of Heaven.

He charged at them without a thought, raised his rake and struck at the Bodhisattva. Pilgrim Mu Zha blocked him and shouted, “You wretched monster! Mind your manners. Take this cudgel!” The demon said, “This monk doesn’t know when he’s dead! Take my rake!” They charged and clashed at the foot of the mountain, staking all on the contest. What a fight:

The demon is fierce,Hui’an mighty. The iron cudgel drives straight for the heart;the rake meets it with a slash at the face.Earth and dust fly up and darken Heaven and Earth;flying sand and hurtling stones alarm the ghosts and gods. The nine-toothed rake shines and glitters, its paired rings clanging;the single cudgel, black as night, flies in both his hands. This one is a heavenly king’s son;that one, a marshal turned spirit. One guards the Dharma on Mount Potalaka;one lives as a demon in a mountain cave.Meeting here, they vie for mastery:who will lose and who will win, no one knows.

They were at the height of their fight when Guanshiyin tossed a lotus down from midair and separated rake and staff. Startled by the sight, the monster asked, “Where have you come from, monk, to fool me with flowers conjured before my eyes?” Mu Zha said, “You wretched thing, with your mortal flesh and blind eyes! I am a disciple of the Bodhisattva of the South Sea. My Master tossed down that lotus — don’t you even recognize it?” The monster said, “The Bodhisattva of the South Sea? Do you mean Guanshiyin, who sweeps away the three calamities and saves beings from the eight difficulties?” Mu Zha said, “Who else?” The monster threw down his rake and bowed his head to the ground. “Brother,” he said, “where is the Bodhisattva? Please trouble yourself to introduce me.” Mu Zha looked up and pointed. “Isn’t that her?” The monster knocked his head towards the sky and cried loudly, “Bodhisattva, forgive me! Forgive me!”

Guanyin lowered her cloud, came forward and asked, “Where are you from, wild boar turned spirit? Where do you haunt, you old swine, to dare block my way here?” The monster said, “I am no wild boar, nor an old swine. I was Marshal Tianpeng of the River of Heaven. But I got drunk and made advances to Chang’e, and the Jade Emperor had me struck two thousand times with a hammer and banished to the dusty mortal world. My one true spirit came straight down to take possession of a womb and be reborn. Who would have thought I’d take the wrong road and end up in a sow’s womb, turning into this! I bit the sow to death, killed the rest of the pigs, took possession of this mountain and lived by eating people. I never expected to meet the Bodhisattva. Please, I beg you, save me! Save me!” The Bodhisattva asked, “What is this mountain called?” The monster said, “Blessing-Mound Mountain. There is a cave here called Cloud-Stack Cave. A Second Sister Luan used to live in it. Seeing I had some skill with weapons, she took me in as head of the household — what they call a husband who comes in through the wife’s door. Within a year she died, and everything in the cave passed to me. I’ve been here for years and years, with no trade to keep me. I just follow my nature and eat people to live. I beg the Bodhisattva’s forgiveness.” The Bodhisattva said, “As the ancients said, ‘If you want a future, don’t act as though you had none.’ You broke the law in the upper world, and now you still refuse to give up your cruel heart, killing and committing sins. Won’t you be punished for both crimes?” The monster said, “A future, a future! If I do as you say, am I supposed to live on wind? As the saying goes, ‘Follow the officials’ law and you’ll be beaten to death; follow the Buddha’s law and you’ll starve to death.’ Off you go! Off you go! Better to catch a traveller and eat his fat, greasy flesh — damn his mother! What do I care about two crimes or three, a thousand crimes or ten thousand?” The Bodhisattva said, “‘When a person wishes to do good, Heaven will surely grant it.’ If you will take refuge in true attainment, you will find a way to feed yourself. The world has the five grains to satisfy hunger. Why live by eating people?”

At these words the monster seemed to wake from a dream. “I want to turn to the right path,” he told the Bodhisattva, “but ‘when you have offended Heaven, there is nowhere you can pray.’” The Bodhisattva said, “I have received the Buddha’s command to go to the Eastern Land and find someone to fetch the scriptures. You can become his disciple and make the journey to the Western Heaven with him. Let your service make amends for your crimes, and I promise you will be freed from these afflictions.” The monster eagerly answered, “I’ll go! I’ll go!” Only then did the Bodhisattva lay her hand on his crown and give him the precepts. Pointing to his body, she made Zhu his surname and gave him the religious name Zhu Wuneng. From then on he obeyed her command and returned to truth, kept a vegetarian fast, gave up the five pungent foods and three forbidden meats, and waited only for the scripture-seeker.

The Bodhisattva and Mu Zha took leave of Wuneng and continued with cloud and mist half raised. As they went, they saw a jade dragon crying out in the sky. The Bodhisattva approached and asked, “What dragon are you, suffering here?” The dragon said, “I am a son of Ao Run, the Dragon King of the West Sea. I set a fire that burned the bright pearl in his hall. My royal father memorialized the Court of Heaven, accusing me of defying him. The Jade Emperor had me hung in the air and beaten three hundred times. I am to be executed any day now. I beg the Bodhisattva to save me! Save me!”

Hearing this, Guanyin went straight through the Southern Gate of Heaven with Mu Zha. The two Heavenly Masters, Qiu and Zhang, met her at once and asked, “Where are you going?” The Bodhisattva said, “This poor monk wishes to see the Jade Emperor.” The two Heavenly Masters hurried to report, and the Jade Emperor came down from his hall to welcome her. The Bodhisattva paid her respects and said, “This poor monk has received the Buddha’s command to seek someone in the Eastern Land to fetch the scriptures. On the way I came across a sinful dragon hung in the air, and have come expressly to petition Your Majesty to spare his life and give him to this poor monk, so that he may serve as a mount for the scripture-seeker.” The Jade Emperor at once decreed a pardon and sent a heavenly general to release the dragon and give him to the Bodhisattva. She thanked him for his favour and departed. The young dragon bowed his head in thanks for his life and submitted to her orders. She sent him into a deep ravine to await the scripture-seeker, turn into a white horse and go to the West to win merit. The young dragon accepted her command and hid himself away; let us leave him there.

The Bodhisattva led Pilgrim Mu Zha across this mountain and continued towards the Eastern Land. Before long they suddenly saw ten thousand shafts of golden light and a thousand streams of blessed vapour. Mu Zha said, “Master, that light comes from Five Elements Mountain. The Buddha’s seal is still there.” The Bodhisattva said, “Then the Great Sage Equal to Heaven, who disrupted the Peach Banquet and threw the Heavenly Palace into turmoil, is now imprisoned here.” Mu Zha said, “He is indeed! He is indeed!” Master and disciple went up the mountain to inspect the seal. It bore the six true syllables, ‘Om mani padme hum’. When the Bodhisattva had read it, she sighed over his fate and composed a poem. A poem says:

Alas, the demon monkey would not obey the law;in those days he recklessly flaunted his prowess.False to his heart, he disrupted the Peach Banquet;bold beyond measure, he slipped into the Tushita Palace.Among a hundred thousand soldiers he had no equal;in the ninefold heavens his might commanded awe.Since our Buddha confined him here, when will he stretch his limbs and show his skill again?

Their talk had already disturbed the Great Sage. From beneath the mountain he shouted, “Who’s up there reciting poems and airing my faults?” Hearing him, the Bodhisattva went down the mountain to look. Beneath the rocky cliff, the earth god, mountain gods and heavenly generals guarding the Great Sage all came to bow and welcome her, then led her before him. She saw that he was pressed inside a stone box: his mouth could speak, but his body could not move. The Bodhisattva said, “You there, Sun — do you know me?” The Great Sage opened his fiery eyes and golden pupils, nodded and cried out, “How could I not know you? You are none other than the greatly merciful, greatly compassionate Bodhisattva Guanshiyin of Mount Potalaka in the South Sea, whom we invoke in homage, who saves us from suffering and disaster. Thank you for your care! Thank you for your care! Each day here feels like a year, and not a single friend comes to see me. Where have you come from?” The Bodhisattva said, “By the Buddha’s command I am going to the Eastern Land to find someone to fetch the scriptures. Passing this way, I have stopped expressly to visit you.” The Great Sage said, “The Buddha tricked me and pinned me beneath this mountain. For more than five hundred years I haven’t been able to stretch or struggle free. I beg the Bodhisattva to find some means of mercy and rescue Old Sun!” The Bodhisattva said, “Your burden of sin is very deep, you wretch. If I rescue you, I fear you will cause more trouble, and that would do no good.” The Great Sage said, “I have learned to repent. I only ask your great compassion to show me a path. I am willing to cultivate myself.” Truly:

Let one thought arise in a human heart, and Heaven and Earth both know.If good and evil received no recompense,Heaven and Earth would surely be unjust.

The Bodhisattva was filled with joy at these words. She told the Great Sage, “The sacred classic says, ‘Speak words of goodness, and those a thousand li away will answer; speak words without goodness, and those a thousand li away will turn against you.’ Since this is your wish, wait until I reach the Great Tang in the Eastern Land and find someone to fetch the scriptures. I shall have him rescue you. You can become his disciple, follow the teaching and receive its sustaining blessing, enter our Buddhist fold and cultivate true attainment once more. What do you say?” The Great Sage answered again and again, “I’ll go! I’ll go!” The Bodhisattva said, “Since you have turned towards good attainment, I shall give you a religious name.” The Great Sage said, “I already have a name. It is Sun Wukong.” Still more delighted, the Bodhisattva said, “Two others have already submitted to me on the road, and both have names beginning with Wu. Yours begins with Wu as well, so you belong with them. Very good! Very good! In that case there is no need for further instructions. I am off.” The Great Sage saw his nature, understood his heart and turned to Buddhism; the Bodhisattva kept him in her compassionate thoughts as she sought the holy monk.

She left with Mu Zha and went straight east. Before many days had passed they reached Chang’an in the Great Tang. Drawing in the mist and gathering up the clouds, master and disciple changed into two wandering monks afflicted with scabies and sores and entered the city. Before they knew it, evening had come. Near the main market street they saw a shrine to an earth god and walked straight in. The earth god was terrified and his ghost soldiers trembled, but recognizing the Bodhisattva, he bowed his head to the ground and welcomed her inside. Then he hurried to inform the City God, the Altar Warden and the gods of every shrine in Chang’an. All knew it was the Bodhisattva and came to pay their respects. “Bodhisattva, forgive us gods for being late to welcome you.” The Bodhisattva said, “You must not let the slightest word of this get out. I have come here by the Buddha’s command to seek someone to fetch the scriptures. Let me borrow your shrine for a few days. Once I have found the true monk, I shall return.” The gods went back to their own places, sending the earth god off to lodge for the time being in the City God’s temple. Master and disciple concealed their true forms.
