Now, Pilgrim Sun and his two companions followed the official sent to summon them to the Meridian Gate. A palace eunuch at once announced them and passed on the order to enter. The three stood side by side without making any obeisance. The king asked, “Are you three the accomplished disciples of the holy monk, Our prince consort? What are your surnames and names? Where do you live? Why did you leave the household life? What scriptures are you seeking?” Pilgrim stepped forward, intending to enter the hall. A guard beside the throne shouted, “Stop! Whatever you have to say, stand down there and address the throne.” Pilgrim laughed. “We who have left the household life take a step forward whenever we can.” Bajie and Sha Monk also moved up behind him. Afraid that his rough manners would alarm the king, the elder rose and called, “Disciple, His Majesty asks why you have come. Tell him at once.” Seeing his master standing in attendance at the side, Pilgrim could not help crying out, “Your Majesty, to slight others is to slight yourself! Since you have chosen my master as prince consort, why make him stand in attendance? In this world a daughter’s husband is called an honoured gentleman. What sense is there in denying an honoured gentleman a seat?” At this the king went pale with fright. He wanted to leave the hall but feared losing his dignity before the assembled court. He could only force himself to be brave and order an attendant to fetch an embroidered stool and invite the Tang Monk to sit. Only then did Pilgrim address the throne:
“Old Sun’s ancestral home is the Water-Curtain Cave on Flower-Fruit Mountain, in the kingdom of Aolai on the Eastern Continent of Purvavideha.Heaven was my father, Earth my mother;a stone split, and I was born.I bowed to a perfected masterand learnt the Great Way.Returning to my immortal homeland,I gathered my followers in a blessed cave-heaven.I went beneath the sea to subdue dragons, climbed mountains to capture beasts.I struck my name from the register of death, entered the rolls of life, and was appointed Great Sage Equal to Heaven.I admired jade towersand delighted in jewelled halls.Among heavenly immortals,I sang and rejoiced each day;In sacred realms,I made merry every morning. But I disrupted the Peach Banquet and rebelled against the Heavenly Palace, until the Buddha captured and subdued me.Pinned beneath Five Elements Mountain, I ate iron pellets when hungry and drank molten copper when thirsty; for five hundred years I tasted neither tea nor rice.Happily my master came from the Eastern Land to worship in the West; at Guanyin’s command I escaped Heaven’s punishment and that great ordeal, and entered the true Buddhist path of yoga.My former religious name was Wukong;now I am called Pilgrim.”
Hearing such an illustrious history, the king hurried in alarm down from his dragon throne, came over and took the elder by the arm with his own royal hand. “Prince consort, it must be Heaven’s decree that We have met you and gained such an immortal marriage and immortal kin!” Sanzang thanked him again and again for his favour and asked the king to return to his throne.
The king asked again, “Which is your second accomplished disciple?” Bajie thrust out his snout and declared with a show of might:
“Old Zhu was a man in a former life, greedy for pleasure and fond of idleness. My whole life was muddled;my nature ran wild and my heart went astray.I knew nothing of Heaven’s height or Earth’s depth, could not fathom the breadth of seas or the distance of mountains. As I idled in quiet seclusion,I suddenly met a perfected man.Half a sentenceuntangled the net of my sins; Two or three wordsbroke through the gates of disaster.I awoke to understanding then and there and took him as my master, diligently practising the work of two eights and reverently refining the stages before and after three threes. My practice fulfilled, I ascended in flightand rose to Heaven’s court.Favoured by the Jade Emperor’s generous kindness, I was appointed Marshal Tianpeng, commanding the troops of the River of Heaven and roaming freely through its palaces. But drunk on wine at the Peach Banquet, I molested Chang’e, lost my rank and was banished to the mortal world;Entering the wrong womb,I was born in the shape of a pig.On Blessing-Mound Mountain I lived, committing boundless evil.I met Guanyin, who showed me the path of goodness.I took refuge in Buddhismand became the Tang Monk’s protector.Straight to the Western Heaven we go,to bow and seek the wondrous scriptures. My religious name is Wuneng;I am called Bajie.”
The king listened with a trembling heart and shaking nerves, not daring to look at him. The Idiot grew more and more animated, shaking his head, thrusting out his snout, sticking up his ears and laughing loudly. Again afraid that he would alarm the king, Sanzang scolded him. “Bajie, control yourself!” Only then did he fold his hands and stand respectfully, putting on a show of refinement.

He asked again, “Third accomplished disciple, why did you take refuge in the faith?” Sha Monk pressed his palms together and said:
“Old Sha was once an ordinary mortal;fearing the cycle of rebirth, I sought the Way.I wandered to the corners of the seas, roamed to the ends of the earth. My robe and begging bowl were always with me;within my dwelling I constantly refined my heart and spirit.Through such devotionI found immortal companions.I nurtured the Infantand joined him in a destined union with the Maiden.Three thousand deeds fulfilled,I brought the Four Images into harmony.I rose to Heaven, bowed to the lord of the dark firmament, and was appointed the Curtain-Raising General, attending the phoenix carriage and dragon chariot, with the title of general. At the Peach Banquet I too came to grief: I accidentally broke a crystal goblet and was banished to Flowing-Sand River, where I changed my face and form, committed sins and harmed living beings.Happily the Bodhisattva travelled far to the Eastern Land, urged me to take refuge, and told me to await the Buddhist pilgrim from the Tang, who would go to the Western Heaven to seek scriptures and attain the true fruit. From then on I reformed myselfand cultivated great enlightenment once more. The river gave me my surname; my religious name is Wujing, and I am called Monk.”
Hearing this, the king was both frightened and delighted: delighted that his daughter had chosen a living Buddha, frightened that the three were in truth demon gods. While he wavered between fear and joy, the Astronomical Director addressed the throne. “The wedding is set for the twelfth day of this month in this year, an auspicious Renzi day. The marriage chart is favourable in every respect: a suitable time to wed.” The king asked, “What day is today?” The Astronomical Director replied, “Today is the eighth, a Wushen day, when the monkey presents fruit, well suited to receiving worthy men and attending to affairs.” Overjoyed, the king ordered the officials in attendance to clean the halls, towers and pavilions of the imperial garden and invite the prince consort and his three accomplished disciples to rest there for the time being. Later a fine wedding banquet would be prepared and the princess given to him in marriage. Everyone obeyed the royal command. The king left court and the officials dispersed; we leave them there.
