Falsehood assumes a true form, and the Jade Rabbit is captured;True yin returns to its proper place and joins the spirit’s source

Now, the Tang Monk followed the king into the inner palace, full of worry and sorrow. Drums and music thundered to the skies, and rare fragrances swept into his nostrils. He kept his head down, not daring to look up. Pilgrim, secretly delighted, perched on top of his Vairocana cap, summoned his divine light and opened his fiery eyes and golden pupils to look about. He saw two ranks of richly dressed women arranged like the Flower Palace and mansions of the immortals, surpassing even spring breezes within brocade curtains. Truly:

Supple and graceful, with the substance of jade and skin like ice.Pair upon pair, their charm outdoes the Lady of Chu;couple upon couple, their beauty surpasses Xi Shi.Cloud-like hair coils high beneath bright flying phoenixes;faint moth-wing brows lie low as distant hills.Reed organs sound in elegance;flutes and drums play on and on.Gong, shang, jue, zhi and yu rise and fall, their high and low notes all in harmony.Clear songs and lovely dances never cease to charm;flowers massed in brocade delight in every hue.

Seeing that not a single worldly thought stirred in his master, Pilgrim secretly smacked his lips in praise. “A fine monk, a fine monk! He dwells amid brocade, yet his heart feels no desire; he walks through jade splendour, yet his mind is not led astray.”

Before long the queen and consorts came out of the Zhique Palace with the princess in their midst. They all went to greet the king, crying, “Long live Our King! Ten thousand years, ten thousand times ten thousand years!” The elder trembled in alarm, at a loss what to do. Pilgrim had already seen through the deception: above the princess’s head he could make out a faint trace of demonic vapour, though it was not especially fierce. He hurried down to his master’s ear and called, “Master, the princess is a fake.” The elder said, “If she’s a fake, how do we make her show her true form?” Pilgrim replied, “I’ll reveal my Dharma body and seize her here and now.” The elder said, “No, no! You may frighten His Majesty. Wait until the king and queen have withdrawn, then use your powers.”

But Pilgrim had been impatient all his life. How could he wait? With a great shout he showed his own form, rushed forward, caught hold of the princess and cursed her. “You wicked beast! You’ve passed off your sham as the real thing here. All these pleasures you’ve been enjoying ought to be enough for you. But your heart still isn’t satisfied! You want to trick my master as well, ruin his true yang and satisfy your lust!” The king was scared into a daze; the queen and consorts stumbled and scrambled; every palace maid and richly dressed woman ran for cover, each intent on saving her own life. It was just like this:

Spring winds sweep wild;autumn breezes whistle cold.Spring winds sweep wild through the garden, setting a thousand flowers swaying;Autumn breezes whistle into the royal grounds, sending ten thousand leaves adrift.Tree peonies break and lean beneath the rails;herbaceous peonies blow askew and lie beside the fence.Lotuses on the pond banks shake in confusion;chrysanthemum blooms heap about the terrace base.Crabapple blossoms fall helpless in the dust;fragrant roses lie asleep in the wild.Spring winds snap the stems of water chestnuts and lotuses;winter snow bends the plum’s tender blooms.Pomegranate petalsscatter east and west through the inner courts;Willow branches on the banksdroop slantwise north and south of the royal palace. One wild night of wind and rain upon fair flowers;countless fallen reds spread brocade across the ground.

Sanzang was more flustered than ever. Trembling, he clung to the king and cried, “Your Majesty, don’t be afraid! Don’t be afraid! This is my unruly disciple using his powers to tell the false from the true.”
