The Concubine Who Beat Off the Robbers

A line drawing in the manner of a late-Qing lithographed edition: on a moonlit night in the brick-paved courtyard of a wealthy house, a young woman in a plain jacket and long skirt stands in the centre, holding a long hooked carrying pole upright with one hand on her hip and looking back with a smile, while one burglar sits holding his head beside a cudgel, another lies sprawled on his back near a dropped knife, and two more cling to the garden wall trying in vain to climb it, with the hall doors, a well, buckets, a jar and a potted plant behind.

On the western edge of Yidu there lived a man of a great family, enormously rich. He kept a concubine who was gentle and lovely, but his principal wife bullied and crushed her and had her whipped and beaten at every turn. The concubine served her with the utmost care. The man pitied her and often comforted her in private, but she never said a word of complaint.
